Aye, as sippin' rums go, this one be fairly decent. She not be a true 18 year-old tho. Trust the Captain on that [wink] She smells sweet with vanilla, caramel, oak, peppery spices, and just a hint of tobacco. As taste goes, she be a bit drier, not as sweet. The vanilla is still on board, but not so much for the caramel. There be a slight earthy bitterness about her, along with the peppery spices, oak, and a wee bit of tobacco from before. Still, she be fairly smooth and tasty with very little burn goin' down the hatch. Not terribly sweet, not terribly complex, not terribly honest about her age, but she still be a decent rum! arrrgh!

Bristol Classic Caroni VSOC 10-Year rum

Bristol Classic Caroni VSOC 10-Year review posted over 3 years ago by Rene Rum (PREMIUM) 🇨🇭 | 547 ratings

Rich amber with copper reflections in the glass.
In the nose the typical Caroni fragrances of old wooden furniture are visible. But this furniture is not as usual in an old car repair shop but in the forest. Moss, resin, candied fruits and flowers dipped in caramel are in one of the open drawers. Something sweet and elegant scurries through the trees.
On the palate warm, soft, lovely and tender. Caramel drips slowly from a wooden tub into the vanilla cream, freshly grated cardamom and black pepper join in. Freshly baked butter sablés with sun-dried tropical fruits melt on the tongue.
In the finish a very interesting twist, wood and resin disappear and give way to a very lovely "sweetness", almost like a sherry barrel finish. The wood and resin come back after a few minutes.
A quite acceptable Caroni that comes without rubber and diesel aromas, so it doesn't look so "dirty". Some bottles are still on the market for approx. 100.-, also recommended as every day Caroni. For nosey parker, discoverers and connoisseurs. -8

Fire and thunder! This be an exceptional rum for the price! She smells sweet of vanilla and a hint of somethin' toasty, which I be at a loss to speak on. As for taste, the vanilla disappears like a ghost ship, but in its place there be orange and milk chocolate... but toasty! She be plenty spicy with a hint of cinnamon, too. There be a bit cognac on board, but not 'til the finish, and barely then. This rum be smooth with little burn and worth every penny. Aye, this be a right fine rum, or I be a lubbery Dutchman, which I ain't!

This is supposed to be a stellar mixing rum, but damn is pretty good for sipping. Very creamy feeling and you can taste some funkiness. This is the same as Veritas, but this is the brand name used for the US market.
Nose: ripe banana.
Taste: Ripe tropical fruits, very creamy, and sweet in a good way.
The aftertaste is even better, the fruit flavor dominates your palate for a long time.
I will need to try it on cocktails but damn I already love it like that.

Very good is quite different from what I used to drink (Barbancourt) very smooth and has no harsh alcohol feeling, I was expecting more like the herbal flavor but is very dim.
Nose: Candies.
Taste: smooth, kind of reminds me of a Cognac.
The aftertaste is where you feel more of the herbal and sugarcane properties.

El Dorado 12-Year rum

El Dorado 12-Year review posted over 3 years ago by Mr. Rumantic 🇩🇪 | 296 ratings

The El-Dorado 12years is a molasses blend which has been stored in bourbon barrels for at least 12 years. The rum comes from Guyana and is dazzled with various pot stills distilled rums. It is the entry-level segment of El-Dorado and can be bought quickly for just under 30euros. The rum with classic 40% is bottled in the bottle typical of El-Dorado. I think the optic is ok. The rum is strongly sweetened. At least 40g/l of sugar have been added.

In the nose, the rum is sharp. Alcohol is the order of the day. Leaving the rum time comes vanilla and some wood with you. Sweet notes make some room for themselves. I don't find much interesting in my mouth. Lots of sweetness with a sharp touch. Some wood, some oak. Caramel vanilla. I don't know what is so great about this rum. The finish is then also rather sharp. Some nut and bitter substances.

For 30Euro the rum is really ok, even if I somehow don't believe the 12 years. Definitely a mass product. And it tastes just boring. The more empty the bottle became, I was able to gain more from it. Had the feeling the alcohol note becomes milder. In the end I was happy when it was done. Better to spend 10 euros more and buy something decent.

Light on the nose, oak, vanilla, chocolate, rather smooth taste with pronounced oak, the aftertaste is almost not there. Passable as sipper, there is nothing unpleasant, but also nothing I would like to return to. Reedit: I bought it after some two years from my original review, the smell is quite chemical, the taste diluted and the afterburn is quite pronounced. Original score was 6, got worse.

Seriously. Do not jump after this sad excuse of a rum, wouldn't be worth of the money even if it cost half the price. I've wasted 30€ on this garbage.

Smell: really sweet, pleasant, although you can smell an artificials in it. Fruit, marshmallows, honey, vanilla.

Pallette: Now what the hell is this? The first second this liquid touches your tongue it tastes really good, just like it smells. But after that comes...

Aftertaste: pure bitterness. Nothing else. Bitter than any tonic water, any raw almonds, or anything bitter that you can imagine. No specific taste, just disgusting taste on tongue.
Hopefully it'll be useful with cola. I'm so incredibly disappointed, jumped straight in their trap with a nice package. Should've buy that El Dorado 12 for a same price...

Flor de Caña 12-Year review posted over 3 years ago by Seko 🇨🇿 | 205 ratings

The rum is overall unadulterated and honest, but there is some kind of strange herbal bitterness in the aftertaste, which got quite pronounced and annoying as I went through the bottle in a few weeks. Yes it is reasonably smooth, spicy, smoky and all that, but somehow it just missed it with me as a sipper. Maybe the first rum I would appreciate to actually have some sugar added. Good with coke.

Gosling's Gold rum

Gosling's Gold review posted over 3 years ago by Seko 🇨🇿 | 205 ratings

It has a strong nose with esters, the taste is both smooth and spicy and there is a long spicy aftertaste. At actually can be sipped if you do not mind the slight alcohol burn at the end, after a few glasses it almost vanishes and the middle palate feeling turns towards smooth and creamy. Primarily this is a decent mixer, and well crafted rum without sugar added.

Gosling's Black Seal rum

Gosling's Black Seal review posted over 3 years ago by Seko 🇨🇿 | 205 ratings

Aroma is strong, with molasses and some esthers, the taste is semi-sweet, spicy, fruity, but not especially complex, there is a distinctive aftertaste of licorice turning towards bitter with some alcohol burn in it. This rum is just enough smooth to drink it neat, but with a rather uncomplicated taste it is not its main discipline as it is mainly a mixer. My first rating from 2020 was 7, but re-taste 04/2022 ended up with rating six, overall the aftertaste somewhat more bitter than I remember as if there was also wormwood added to the licorice component. If you like liqueurs such as Fernet, you may add a point or two.
