We were some friends teaming up at Cane Rum Society in Stockholm to celebrate Foursquare Appreciation Day.
After our planned tasting of four different Foursquare ECS’s led by our friend the Swedish importer, Lars Renbjer, we went on with two Foursquare Velier releases.
First out was the Raconteur the 8th rum in the collaboration between Luca Gargano of Velier and Richard Seale of Foursquare.
Raconteur is a blend of rums distilled in 2006 in Coffey column stills and double copper retort pot stills.
The first rum in the blend was aged in ex-bourbon casks for 17 years, while the second benefited from a double maturation: 5 years in ex-bourbon casks, then 12 years in old oloroso sherry barrels.
This release, of 4800 bottles, is the oldest offered in the Foursquare Velier series.
The nose is intense, aromatic, spicy and nutty with recognizable notes of tobacco, licorice, varnish, rubber, caramel and vanilla.
At the palate it’s buttery, oaky and herbal with tastes of burnt sugar, maple syrup, black tea, varnish and a little medicinal.
The long lasting finish is fruity with notes of chocolate, leather and raisins.
Overall a fantastic and very complex rum.

I went to Foursquare in Barbados today to buys some ESC newer series and was disappointed that that had no ESC or Velier for purchase. Si I just had to sample a few, this was my first choice and what a great one at 62% it surprisingly drank very smooth with baked bread raisins and other flavors. Almost worth the trip, though a bottle would be nicer.

This bottling of Velier comes from Barbados from the Foursquare Distillery. It is a blend of pot and column style which was distilled in 2006 and was first allowed to be stored tropically in oak barrels for 5 years and then again for another 12 years tropically in sherry barrels. 17 years of tropical storring is, of course, enormous. The rum was bottled in cask strength with 61% alcohol without additives or filtration as a single cask in 4800 bottles.

In the nose I immediately recognize the classic Foursquare profile. But it seems deeper, more palatable and more mature. I get a nutty spice with vanilla, caramelized tropical fruit, coconut, roasted aromas, chocolate and burnt sugar. The whole thing is very round, heavy and delicious. On the palate, the rum is well balanced. The sherry barrel brings a nice depth. I get vanilla, caramel and roasted aromas. Burnt sugar, dried fruits and nuts. In addition, a good portion of wood influence with mocha and dark chocolate. The rum is very creamy and thick. He has an amazingly present sweetness. The finish is dry with more wood influence. Vanilla, nut, coconut and more tannins and roasted aromas. The rum remains present in the mouth for a long time.

An absolutely great rum and if you like Foursquare, you will celebrate this bottling. Everything comes together perfectly here. A long tropical storage with a very successful sherry cask influence. Very pleasant to drink. At the same time, however, it is the old Foursquare problem. If you know one, you know them all. Of course, it's a bit provocative, but the rum doesn't really lure me out of the reserve with the hype and price. If you have a bottle and you decide to open it, you may have one of the best Foursquare bottlings in the glass.
