Back on the caroni wagon. This time it's 1423's version of a bristol classic caroni. It weighs in at 51,9% vol with 21 years in the barrel, part Caribbean, part European ageing. So far so good. Pouring it in the glass I suspect this rum is at the heavy end of the scale, even among other caroni. It's very dark and pungent in the nose with thick notes of petroleum, tar, burt wood and rubber but perhaps underneath also a bit of dark fruit and berries. Still optimistic.
In the mouth I start to feel a little violated though. I pick up burnt toast and wood, tar and diesel. The rum is very big but to sharp around the edges and the balance seems off. It's to dominated by burnt notes, especially in the finish. Caroni rum in general can offer exceptional experiences, but if you remotely share my taste-buds, you wont find it in this bottle.
