Notes of brown sugar, molasses, and burtnt sugars on the nose. Great for mixing in a Three dots and a dash or in coffee.

The palate gets better with age. Try the 8 or the 12.

Good rum to sipping. The smell of almonds and dried plums. Good value for money.

This rum is super mellow. Aside from some moderate spice on the front end, the rum doesn't hit you hard at all. Butterscotch, caramel, light notes of milk chocolate and vanilla. A touch of fruits, such as banana and orange peel.
I think that the El Dorado 8 is a more robust and complex version of this spirit, and the El Dorado 12 serves as a better smooth, desserty sipper. Still, not a bad bottle necessarily.

pas trop fan de rums britanniques et celui-ci est très fort en épices et réglisse.

It’s not bad as a sipper but I wouldn’t say it’s “good” pretty decent in a Mai tai

Aroma
Nutty, mild molasses, and a hint of caramel.

Taste
Molasses, brown sugar, and a hint of cherry.

This rum makes a great mixer! This is a blended aged rum under Martin Cate's classification system and it plays that role beautifully. It has some great flavors but none are too overpowering. This fulfills a great role in any Tiki bar by presenting a rum that is a sweeter, more mild version of a blended aged rum that balances out the stoutness of blended black overproof rum. A great buy and a must have for any Tiki bar!

Im a big fan of the ED 12, and though the ED 5 does not come close to that level of quality, its very obvious that these rums are related. The Aromas are very much alike in character. The palate is also with the same robust demerara fingerprint. The ED 5 Has a medium melasse sweetness, that rolls off into a spicy and slightly edged oaky, tobaco finish. Only tried it neat so far, but i imagine that its robust and nice character would compliment a cocktail extremly well. Nice value

Sampled at the Laka Lono Rum Club Tasting on 6/30/21. Rich deep gold. Mild caramel and banana aroma. Medium-smooth palate. Huge banana flavor. Coffee spiciness. This I keep in my bar for all tiki drinks calling for an unspecified demerara rum. A workhorse.

I tried this alongside some of the more aged El Dorado's (12, 15, and 21), and (no surprise) this was my least favorite. It's a fair step down from the 12 as it lacks in sweetness and complexity. The smell is weaker, and the taste is harsher.
