Guyana | Aged | 40% ABV | Pot and Column Still
El Dorado 12-Year Rum is composed of a blend of aged rums, all at least 12 years old. The rums are distilled using a combination of stills including coffey stills and a double wooden pot still before being aged in bourbon oak casks.
Demerara Distillers of Guyana produces El Dorado 12-year rum and is the country's last remaining distillery, with origins tracing back to 1670. The name ""El Dorado"" references the legendary city of gold that is said to be in the country's Rupununi region.

I had this alongside the El Dorado 21, 15, and 5 in a blind tasting and it came in 3rd (after the 21 and the 15 - no surprise). It has a nice caramel smell and a good taste to match, but lacks the complexity of the 15, and the 21. Of the four, I'd recommend the 15 (the 21 is too big a price jump and isn't really better than the 15).
Was really looking forward to this one but didn't totally do it for me. The first thing that got me was the incredible chemical like aroma. Reminded me of my Dad's plastic model glue. While not a terrible smell, it was the strength of it that caught me off guard. It has more of a burn than some of my favorite, couldn't drink this all night but pleased I picked a bottle up. Finishes with a nice caramel aftertaste.
This is sweet smoky deliciousness at a bargain price! (less than $30 locally)if I add a little El Dorado EHP Single Barrel, it gets even better!
EDIT- this went from being a fav to, damn this is undrinkably sweet in about 18 months.
edited to add sugar test results- 35-39g
A few years later, this is still undrinkably sweet.
Michael from the US is way off. The El Dorado 15 is not good. This is up there with the best of them, regardless of price. Far better than the 15.
A very oaky rich and blended aged Rum. Not a "all nighter" but with a couple around a fire or in a hot tub is marvelous.
Love this rum as a sipper. Love it as a rum fashioned!
This smooth dark rum has an excellent deep oak flavour, that lasts. Wonderful balanced. A pleasure to drink
While not something super special, it is definitely worth the price tag. Decent rum for sipping, and very good for mixing.
I have overlooked this rum for long time just because of red color of the cartoon box. However, high score on RumRatings (7.6 and 1382 reviews at the time) convicted me to give it try.
Cartoon box is really solid and nice. Decent bottle with the cork. And here comes the surprise after opening the bottle, immediate spread of sweet fruity sugarcane aroma. Overwhelming! Beautiful!
However, the taste lags behind the aroma a little. Yes, there is the same sweetness but there is too much of tannin, especially in aftertaste, which goes over this sweetness. Dry finish. But plenty of people like it. I would expect more of balance between the aroma and the taste. Nevertheless, this is great piece in my deposit.
I am not disappointed.
Lush tropical fruit and spice nose with hints of honey and dark sugar...
"El Dorado 12-Year rum review by Mike at Ultimate Rum Guide"
It’s sweeter with more delicate fruit flavours coming to the fore.
"It’s very sweet and quite light. It’s very easy drinking. As a sipping rum it as easy to drink."

Let's start by saying that I am a real fan of Demerara Rums. The bottle presentation and the tie-in to the "City of Gold" only enhanced my desire to try this rum.
It is a nice dark amber pour in the glass. The nose is subdued with no over powering alcohol.
What hits the mouth is a fairly simple rum, however give it a few seconds and the flavor palette expands noticeably. This rum is smooth so there is very little alcohol burn post swallow, however the tastes linger on for a significant period.
I normally take my drinks neat, however I also sample new rums both on ice and with cola. Usually I feel that either option is at best neutral and seldom an improvement, provided that I am testing decent rum.
Personally, I would leave the ice out of ED12, however I find it to be quite enjoyable with Coke.
This is a very reasonable price point rum given that it is a bona fide sipper plus you won't cringe when your visitors add Coke. In fact you may well add Coke yourself some days.
Excellent rum to have in your cabinet as an all rounder
