NR: Good Caroni with a lot of leather but not exceptional 9 out of 10
Nose: Quite sweet and leathery smell, there are many dried fruits (raisins). Here I would draw parallels with Bristol Caronis 1997.
You can also smell the bourbon barrel with vanilla, the light wood and sweet caramel.
Lots of leather, some tar behind it, little rubber but still in the smell.
Darker barrel flavors. The sweetness is very nice, but nothing stands out that I wouldn't already know. I like that smell very much, but I have to say that a 96 Trespassers or The Last have even more power and are more interesting.
Taste: Sweet start with lots of dried fruits and grains (buckwheat), but also some tannins that bring a certain bitterness. I can also perceive herbal aromas. It immediately increases in spice and lets the bourbon barrel free. Vanilla and a lot of bright wood develops. The wood is not old, but still fresh and wet. Towards the finish, a lot of leather develops combined with a little tar and the bitterness of the tannins.
The finish is a bit spicy, with vanilla, wood, tannins, a lot of leather, tar and dried fruits.
Aftertaste: leather, dried fruits, wood, tannins, tar, herbs
Conclusion: A good caroni, it probably represents the year 2000 in an excellent way. Nice composition of flavors, everything is put together very well.
However, for me he is behind the 1996 Caronis. If I take the price into account, I would rather go for a Rum Nation 1999 or a Bristol 1997-2019. Then I don't have this perfect combination of flavors, but I would have much longer enjoyment at a much better price.
