Enjoyed on March 30, 2024 at our home Tiki Bar - King Kahuna Lounge

Nose: More alcohol forward and vegetation on the nose compared to other aged JM

Taste/Palate: Tropical notes with ripe banana playing a role. Wood and spice l.

Finish: Balanced with some pepper finish.

This particular agricole was salty during nosing, then grass and compost and after careful extraction also cognac barrels.

So this was an interesting and different experience as this was my first decent experience with a true Agricole rum (my experience with Barbancourt 8 Year was not pleasant). Going in armed with knowing a bit more about what to expect I found this rum to be interesting. It isn’t going to pull me away from Spanish and Bajan rums but it was a good experience. The nose is Lemons and light caramel and vanilla notes. It gives a sense of refreshment rather than warmth. The palate is oak, lemonade and some spice combination that is difficult to describe...maybe anise (?) . What I did find remarkable was the aftertaste because it wasn’t as much as an aftertaste as it was a lasting experience between the throat and nose which left a distinguished aroma or memory of fresh cut grass in the springtime. That was both unexpected and the best part of this rum. It is not as much a taste as it is an experience of the senses. Interesting.

Palate: 6
Aftertaste: 7
Smoothness: 6
Versatility: 7
Price: 6

Total: 6.3

It's not the best JM out there but it's well done and anyway. XO is certainly a best choice

Quality rum where alcohol beats other tastes and smells. As i prefer exploring tastes, this rum is not so suitable for me.

VSOP at 4 years might be generous. It isn't bad, it just isn't great. It has a smoky, spicy undertone and more bite than smoothness. It is probably over priced as a sipper and too expensive for a mixer. I have definitely had better at this price point. Dooley's 13 year at have the price is twice the rum.

After trying the gold version, I was actually hoping for much more from the VSOP.
It started great though, nice dark color, and very very nice sugar cane smell with some notes of Banana (which I think). But then tasting was a complete other story.
The alcohol is quite strong and the burn too present, so you don't really taste the aromas.
Great start but a disappointed end.
