If you are into Caroni, this is a very fairly priced bottle. The high alcohol percentage is felt and it feels like the rum is powerbombing your tastebuds. To me the only downside is that the rum has matured partly in Europe. So the 18 years don't give the rum the same heavy body as it would, had it stayed the full 18 years in the Caribbean.

Let's read the programm : Caroni, cask strengh (or almost), 18y old. That sounds good. Caution : vanilla-sugarbombs lovers, don't even think about trying this one ! You won't appreciate it. Seriously.
Colour : we don't care. Nose : not the most spectacular from this style. Quite smooth and fruity, the typical tar-like aromas are discreet. Almost disapointed at that time but the better is to come. Mouth, neat : ouch ! No doubt here, we have a Caroni. Strong, complex, explosion of flavours. A round side (fruits, sweetness) and a more woody side : oak and typical "phenolic", tar, liquorice... Finish is everlasting as expected. More liquorice I would say, a bit of herbal things, but there is something else I don't know how to describe (more mineral, even almost ... "salty" ??? not sure)
There is something surprisingly smooth and round in this bottle (for a full proof old Caroni, I mean - don't misunderstand me!) In my opinion it is not needed to add water.
Interesting Caroni expression. Features the expected typical flavours but still different from other bottlings.
Je peux me tromper)

Gently nose and taste at 61,5%. This is a very mild Caroni and still intensive.
The nose is good, could be just a hint sweeter to intensivy the fruit (I could not catch the currant). It's also not very dirty.
The taste is good, in the middle I miss some aromas. The initial taste and the finish are nice. The aftertaste is very good.
A good Caroni, would rate it a 9.5 because of the mildness an intensity.
Nose: wild leather ***, salt (olives) ***, old bread *, behind that is a sweet note (caramel) and a tropical fruit (banana), some tar
Taste initial: first salt, a caramel note, leather
Middle: peppermint, leather
Finish: spice, black currant, leather, some tanins (bitternes)
Aftertaste: peppermint, wild leather, some tar, black currant (nice) and after some minutes banana
Sweetness: 1.5/5
Fruit: 2.5/5
Spice: 2/5
Mildness: 4/5
Complexity: 3/5
Value (175€): 4/5

Gentle aroma. First taste is nice fruity sweet, but after approx. 3 second starts burning (stronger than you would expect from 43%) aftertaste is not pleasant, short with salt tones.

Caroni classic heavy style, almost at points like an older sherry whisky: Big, bold, fruity, oily...Truly a big Caroni.

Rum tasting with my buddy in Tampere continued with Bristol Caroni 19y 1997-2016. Very nice bottle and label design. Mahogany color. Strong floral notes mixed with traditional Trinidad flavors to your nose and palate when neat sipped. Dry burn at the end being bottled at 123 Proof.

Dark amber color towards mahogany. On the nose, there are candied fruits, it is very pastry. Crème brûlée, toast. Subtle notes of smoke and solvent. It is not yet the classic big artillery Caroni.
On the palate, it stays on the same aroma, it is powerful and after a very long aeration, the Caroni classic markers arrive, smoked, bitumen but it does not kill the palate. It's long and beautiful, but it's still accessible for neophytes. Beautiful rum.

Strong and pungent yet sweet and fruity. Each sip is sweet, rich and warming.
"The finish on this rum is exceptional – it is very long and very complex. Oak, fruit, a nice warming burn a touch of tobacco and smoke. ."

Geheimtipp (Noch) toller Caroni zum Discountpreis 9 out of 10
Posted almost 3 years ago by Achim Emmenegger from Germany with 69 ratings
