Black Tot Finest Carribean 5-Year

This is pretty young, but much more cohesive than Smith & Cross for example.
Smell is quite solvent-y with a backdrop of layered sugar. Taste brings up the demerera flavours first - the liquorice and slightly dirty, burnt sugar from DDL - then there's the Bajan element coming in, reminding of typical dry Foursquare. The Jamaican element is pretty subtle. Just a slight touch of funk coming through, yet more noticeable on the finish.

This is young rum. It's flavours are definitely Demerera focused. It's a bit like El Dorado 15 in profile, but younger and fiery, no sugar, and with a finish tempered with Bajan and Jamaican notes.

First time round I only had a sample and I wasn't that impressed, but saw a bottle on special and took a punt that time spent with it would be worth while. And it has been. I'm enjoying this. It's good value, robust in flavour, complex enough to keep me interested. Short of Tiger Shark, this is the best blend I have come across!

Nice taste and not so strong, even with 46.2⁰, a little sweetness on first taste

Black Tot rum is a "Navy style" blend of Caribbean rum from Guyana, Barbados and Jamaica by Elixir Distillers. It's presented at a respectable 46.2% ABV.

On the nose we have ginger, honey, line zest, grapefruit, oak, vanilla, light strawberry and cherry.

The palate brings some vanilla, and the light strawberry comes through with some oilyness.

The finish is medium in length and has pepper, clove, walnut, oak, mint and is slightly drying.

The aroma is very sweet, caramel and sugar, heavy and a little bit sharp.
A heavy body, sweet at first, then more sharp but still nice. The finish is medium long.

Very rich. Lots and lots of molasses flavor from start to finish. Great mouthfeel, and smooth. Depth and body, and a long beautiful finish. Might not be a daily drinker because it is so flavorful, but works well for when you want something heavy.

Black Tot delivers very entertaining blend here. This rum delivers solid alcohol punch - with 46.2 % ABV this should not a surprise. The relatively young components of this navy style blend are apparent on the palate, but in an entertaining way, at least for me. There are molasses on the nose, mixed with tropical fruits and oak, on the palate the taste starts with demerara sugar, which is mixed with molasses and bitter tones of dark chocolate and various gingerbread style spices (anise, chinese anise, ginger, cinnamon), the taste continues with toffee and raisins. The finish is rather simple and dry, with a slight alcohol bite. The official site states there is no added sugar, and less than 1g/l from the barrel (sic). Overall, I like it very much, but in this price range I would expect a bit more matured blend than unaged, 3y and 5y, with longer and more complex finish. Score between 7 and 8. Reedit: after two more bottles which tasted both the same, but for the worse, I am downgrading to 6. The mix got much more simple and harsh, not too bad, but definitely worse than it used to be, on par with with Gunroom 4 ports which is for half the price if you are lucky.
