Trinidad and Tobago | Spiced | 40% ABV | Column Still (1-4)
Kraken Black Spiced Rum was first introduced by Proximo Spirits in 2010 . The dark rum is infused with 11 “secret” spices, caramel and other natural flavors.
The rum gets its name after the mythical sea creature 'The Kraken'. As legend has it, this terrifying creature attacked ships at sea during the 18th and 19th centuries - possibly for all the rum on board.

For me at least, this has been a solid mixer for many years. Since taking an interest in rum more recently, I have spent much more on spiced rums that don't go so well in a mixed drink as this. It has a relatively generic flavour relying on vanilla, so you wont feel miles away from a Captain Morgans spiced for example, but it is richer.
I thought this was different to most spiced rums I've had. One of my top spiced for sure
I don't know how they can label it as a "dark spiced rum"; in actuality, it is just a spiced rum that has a dark colour. It isn't good to drink neat but is quite fresh with coke, lime and lots of ice. For the same price, you could buy Chairman's Reserve which is a vastly superior spiced rum.
Decent enough rum, popular and easy to pick up. Quite a short aftertaste
This stuff is really spiced up. Not for me at all but the bottle is nice
Just a heinous wave of sweet Purell-tasting liquid. I suspect it’s very popular because of the excellent branding. Made in Indiana which explains a lot…. No offense to anyone from Indiana though.
If you are out and have no other choice in the pub Kraken has your back. Usually found in every venue it is a strong staple.
My go-to pick for a better quality rum that's not too expensive.
Real pirate design, you feel the seven seas immediately. it has good characteristics among cheap rums
A caramel/treacley heavy molasses like smell. .
"There is nothing subtle about the spicing and the caramel flavour makes the rum, to my taste overly sweet."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

The contents is not that all Kraked up to be.
I know the marketing wheels have been spinning like lightning with this product and I've got the 40% abv version. The packaging is great, love the bottle. Great colour, almost black in the bottle but more dark reddish in the glass. Aroma is pretty safe, mostly vanilla and some background spice. Taste very much similar as the nose but there is an underlying bitterness that lingers well into the finish
There is something missing and to me it's actually the rummy element if that's a word. Whatever base rum is used its well hidden with whatever they have put into this concoction.
Perhaps the 47% abv version is able to carry the flavours a bit better but I won't be going out of my way to get one any time soon.
