El Dorado Special Reserve 15-Year rum

El Dorado Special Reserve 15-Year

Guyana | Aged | 43% ABV

El Dorado Special Reserve 15-Year rum is crafted from 15 to 25 year old rums that are then blended and married together in bourbon oak casks. Prior to blending the original batches are distilled using 4 unique stills - the Enmore and Diamond Coffey stills, the Port Mourant double wooden pot still, and the Versailles single wooden pot still.

The bottle of El Dorado Special Reserve 15-year was inspired by the the old hand-blown flasks used by sugar planters on the banks of the Demerara river.

This is good stuff. if you like the 12 year old, you are almost certain to appreciate this - and vice versa. Which is better...hmm...well, it really does depend on your tatse buds. They are probably roughly equally as good, but I presonally prefer the 12 year old. This has a sort of background bourbon or cognac element to it, which is interesting but at the expense of the overwhelming rummyness of the 12 year old. The 12 year old, for me is one of the rummyest of rums - by that I mean it tastes almost exactly what I expect good rum to be in my mind's eye. This one is not hugely different, but it gains some flavours whilst loosing the edge in the others. It has all the nose of the 12 year old plus a little furniture polish and extra oak.
I like the big boldness of the 12, the in-your-face rum kick, slight burn on swallow and back of the mouth heat after swallowing it. This one loses half of that, but gains a slight amount of complexity and a bit of oak - I'm not sure it's worth it and I don't want to pay an extra Β£5 for something that I don't think improves on the 12.
Nevertheless, there's no doubt that this is very fine - and I would not argue with those who do prefer it to the 12 year old - I think it would be a roughly 50-50 call amongst rum drinkers.

A great rum - the barmaid where I get has it spot on and refuses to serve you mixer with it.

Absolutely fantastic rum, just don't ruin the taste with mixer or ice

It'll change the way you think about rum. I can't imagine pouring Coke in it, though, I don't even want an ice cube watering it down...

Superb rum. Very different from the 12 el dorado rum.

Should be drink straight up, anything else would be a waste.

Great flavours, makes a killer old fashioned. Not as good as the 12

Foreground sweet notes of the 12 are reduced and a smokier more complex set of flavours come forward, with liquorice and tobacco.

I like this rum equally with the 12 year old they are great rums. However I do wonder if they have added caramel/sugar added post distilling.
