El Dorado Special Reserve 15-Year rum

El Dorado Special Reserve 15-Year

Guyana | Aged | 43% ABV

El Dorado Special Reserve 15-Year rum is crafted from 15 to 25 year old rums that are then blended and married together in bourbon oak casks. Prior to blending the original batches are distilled using 4 unique stills - the Enmore and Diamond Coffey stills, the Port Mourant double wooden pot still, and the Versailles single wooden pot still.

The bottle of El Dorado Special Reserve 15-year was inspired by the the old hand-blown flasks used by sugar planters on the banks of the Demerara river.

The ED 15 is a little more pricey than ED 12, but is certainly worth it. Not as sweet as ED 12, it is a solid purchase to have in you rum cabinet.

made even better by the fact that I picked it up for a song at a supermarket who obviously mispriced it. The only thing I would prefer is that it be bottled at 40% rather than 43%.

This ED15 is truly a nice rum. I would have rate it 8.5 with the 0.5 over my rating of 8 for the ED 12. Price wise in the Ontario, Canada rum market selling for ~60CAD does not represent as much of a good value as its younger brother ED12. The only reason why I did not rank it higher is because I leave my two top rating points for truly fantastic cases which "may" only be found outside my current price range (to be seen). I certainly recommend this spirit especially if you don't mind the sweetness. If you need to add anything else to this one (ice cube included) you cannot call yourself a rum lover.

Later edit: After trying this spirit for a while I have started minding its swetnees. While I still believe its a nice rum I have stopped recommending it as a daily sipper.

After the 12 I was curious to try the 15. Yes, it's a little step up, more complex, more serious.
The color is dark. I detect a smell of varnish (not unpleasant), then caramel and dates. The taste is sweet (but not too much) with hints of caramel, vanilla, dried and candied fruit (dates, figs, raisins). I would rate the 12 at 7.5 and this one at 8. But if you want a good affordable rum you can't go wrong with the 12.

Ok, this is very good rum, I just prefer the 12-year, which, I am given to believe, is not just a younger version of this, but a different rum. The 15-year offers hints of raisins and dark fruit flavors that (I think) indicate a sherry cask somewhere in its history. Many folks prefer this and good for them, but I find the underlying wine-y flavors less preferable than the more oak-y 12-year version.

This rum is a perfect sipper- I love it! Very smooth. On the rocks of course. I still prefer the 12 year more.

El Dorado 15 Special Reserve. Has a dark Amber color. Good legs on the glass. Aroma reminds of vanilla and toffee. It seems like a medium body rum not too sweet. Afterburn is mild and not lasting long. A good sipper.

This one definitely beats it's younger brother. It doesn't quite match the 21 year old, but it comes quite close. To me this is the best value for money you can get from El Dorado.
