One of the better rums that I've tasted that are not super spiced or dark. Maybe I buy a one bottle more, and who knows, maybe I change my mind and raise this a one rank up. In any case, this rum left a good impression.

Sugary caramelly with little scents of vanilla in a nose. Seeeter roasty smokey start with vanilla scents and body. ABVish but not annoying. Softer at end. Not very rich... 20years version is much better...

Nice colour, pleasant aroma and a taste that makes his my everyday rum while I save the XO for special occations.

Notes of tropical fruits, vanilla and coconut.

Sweet taste, with notes of butterscotch, banana and vanilla!

I found it not that good for sipping, but it works great in drinks!

My first sip was actually not bad. The taste was a bit flowery and sweet. I might enjoy this, I thought. My second sip was in the same vein, although I felt I had tasted something similar before. My third sip, however, made me realize where I had tasted this before. Or actually smelled it: In the IKEA flower and scented candles section. And I hate that section. After a few more tries I came to the conclusion: This rum is fine for 1-2 sips or shots, but devastatingly flowery for any longer sessions. It might be good for mixing, but I don't generally mix drinks as I like them neat with a chaser, so I won't know. Sorry, Barbados. I won't be seeing you again...

After an escapade with the fantastic El Dorado line, I was doubtful there were rums that could match them (El Dorado) in cost-to-quality. However, I decided to give this Plantation a go because I heard great things about its more expensive counterparts, and am happy that I did!

As far as the taste goes, it's pleasantly light and extremely approachable--much like what Japanese whiskey is to its respective genre. I catch mild hints of lemon, cinnamon and tropical fruits on both the nose and palate. It's very smooth going down. Flavor does dissipate instantly once swallowed, which I find interesting.

Overall, Plantation Grande Reserve is better than the El Dorado 5-Year, and about on par with the 8-Year as the best rum in its price bracket. Great sipper, great mixer, and should appeal to both the experienced and inexperienced rum drinker.

Great rum for the prize. Smooth, tasty exotic fruits (mostly citruses). Light vanilla ending.

Sugar estimated at 12 GPL.
Excellent value in this rum. Sweet with traces of vanilla, honey, and fruit with a noted trace of coconut. The Plantation flavour profile is present but quite subdued. No big flavours stand out in this rum, which makes it a great mixing rum. At $25 Canadian, you would expect some harsh chemical or funky tastes but not so with this rum. I would suggest this rum over any other rum in this price range, but be careful as it can sneak up on you in mixed drinks.
