A bit of a bite at the first sip, but very smooth finish. Has a whiskey vibe to it, likely due to the 8 year cask aging. I was initially surprised to see that it is made in Guyana, as you don't normally associate Guyana with rum. Would definitely recommend this either on the rocks.
A beautifull rum, hugh step from the 5yrs old too light for me. I like the structure and the balance...
A every day rum...
This is one of the best "cheap" rums around, smooth with some heat, nice colour and smell, well worth having on the shelf...
Hard to get this out here in the San Francisco area, so I horde it when it shows up at my favorite shop (kudos to SF Wine Trading Company in Taraval for special ordering it). It's only a few bucks more than ED5 (here in the US anyway) and a truly superb rum! As far as I'm concerned it renders ED12 completely moot. A bit more firey, young, and aggressive than ED15, and not as suave as EHP. But a fine choice for daily rum goodness. And, you can throw it in a mixed cocktail without feeling too guilty - which of course you'd never do with ED12+
Good for either, kinda gets lost in the shuffle, though. Not as good for sipping as the 12, comparable in a mixed drink to the 5, what is it's role again?
It’s floral, there are notes of dark chocolate and dried fruits.
"It isn’t rough but it does have quite a spicy burn and finish. ."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

On the nose I get notes of treacle from this 8 year old El Dorado Rum, which inevitability makes my mind think of Christmas Pudding. Drank neat, the sweet fruity flavour of this rum is clearly evident, because that’s immediately what you experience on your palate. However, although this rum is sugary, which I love in all rums, (got a sweet tooth what can I say) it’s a thumbs down from me, for three reasons. Firstly, the burn is very harsh. Secondly, it tastes like Christmas Pudding which I can’t stand! And finally, there is zero taste in the finish. In El Dorado’s defence, it does mix well with full fat Coca-Cola and improves some what. But even with the dark fizzy pop coming to its aid, this rum still ends up tasting smoky and heavy with a very strange aftertaste. In that regards, I feel it’s very similar to the entry level offering from Don papa.
