Somehow you can't get past the Botucal Reserva Exclusiva. For 30-40 euros it is a cheap rum and can be bought almost everywhere in Germany. First of all, I can say that I don't understand the hype. Very negative is that the rum is strongly sugared - 44g/l.

In the nose, the rum is very sweet with spice. Some sweet and smokey notes which are quite appealing but give hope for more. On the palate, the botucal disappoints after all. A lot of sweetness from the added sugar destroys a lot of the flavors that the rum wants to offer. I noticed some caramel, toffee and smoke. Most of it is sweetness produced by sugar. The finish is the same sweet with some Toffee and spice. The rum disappeared after a short time and over remains a sticky taste and a film on the tongue that does not really make you want more.

Overall, the rum is totally overvalued. I cannot understand that. Apparently, for many, the high degree of sweetness is still crucial for a good rum. For the same money there are already many rums that have much more to offer. He just confirmed to me that I want to look for and enjoy rums with character and expressiveness. The Botucal can't score here. At party as a guest, I wouldn't say no, but I wouldn't drink it with a visitor at my home either. There are so many better Rums to choose from. But ot gets u drunk.

Tonight’s Rum, Botucal Reserva Exclusiva Rum from Venezuela. Does that bottle look familiar? Well, it should, it’s reported to be the same as Dimplomatico but branded for the German market… So is this a new Rum? I’ll let you decide.
In the glass it’s a light copper color, lighter than it should be for a 12 year; but then it’s a blend and not 100% 12 year. So that makes sense. The nose is of orange, apricots with an under current of almond and brown sugar. It’s not a demarara bouquet as I expected.
My first sip impression finds it easy to start with some heat building over 15 to 20 seconds. It’s Pleasant. It’s not too sweet; I’ve had worse (sweeter). A couple more sips in, the heat subsides and it’s replaced with a bit of warmth in the tummy.
Flavours include orange, caramel or toffee. Some vanilla makes an appearance and the sweetness is just about right. More sips, and the toffee comes out even more. It’s rich and well balanced.
The finish is mild after those few sips and long lasting. It smacks a little dry but the essences of soft butter and brown sugar offset the slight dryness for sure. If you can find this one, I put it at a 9/10 and number 370 of my 500 Rum. Best served neat! If you can’t find Botucal get the Dimplomatico (That too is one of my faves) Cheers!

One of my favourite rums ever!!! Great balance of sweentness with tones of chocolate! One of the best spanish-style rums.

Sweet, but not too sweet - just a good balance. Most people I know mention it as one of the best they tasted (under certain price). Feels natural, not artifically sweetened, which is a good for me.

The Diplomatico Exclusiva Reserva has a stupendous bouquet. The smells and aromas coming from the glass are rich and luxurious. There is a strong indication of caramel with nice accents of cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg and walnuts. The oak push from the barrel aging lies alongside the other scents and smells. I am finding myself wishing the oak was perhaps just a little stronger such tat it would dominate the breezes rather than the caramel.
All the scents and smells from the nosing come through in spades when I taste the rum. There is a nice underlying nuttiness (walnuts and hazelnuts), some sweet caramel and some very delicious baking spices (vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar). As the glass breathes, The richness of the rum builds and I taste even more brown sugar and cinnamon with butter.

This is not my favourite one. I miss the tropical Sweet vanilla taste and every sip was hurting my esophagus after 3 seconds. That’s why I give a 5.
