A little dissapointet. I actually like the 23 solera better
Something did not sit right with me and this rum. As Zacapa XO is among my very favorites my expectations were very high. I have to say that I expected this rum to be smoother because of being aged in a charred barrel. It did have a little more body than 23 Solera, but It was not as smooth. Still good a a mixer. But at his price point, you'd do better to go with something more common.
For the most part I've liked most Zacapa products I've tried.
However; this one is totally different. Right off the bat, smoke, smoke, smoke.
At first I thought; not bad, but by the time I got near the end of my glass, the overpowering smoke flavour started to become sickening.
The smoke really masks all the other flavours and makes this one for me very one dimensional.
I only had a small taste of this rum, but it really surprised me. I'm a fan of the Solera 23, but still find it overly sweet. The Edicion Negra is much more balanced, with a glorious hint of smoke and spice that others mentioned. In true Zacapa form it's as smooth as all get-out, is complex, and (don't worry) still certainly leans sweet.
Worth the price? Debatable—but definitely in another league compared to its familiar sibling.
Rigtig lækker duft som man kender fra Zacapa.
Noget sprittet smag til at starte med, efterfulgt af den kendte Zacapa smag.
Eftersmagen er ok!
Dark and smoky. A little sweet with some vanilla vibe. I get a touch of heat, like hot cinnamon. Nice and deep. Smoke lingers through the finish.
nice rum that's on the sweeter side.
a bit more complex than the 23 and the xo.
with a smoky taste and higher %
great for sipping.
Smells quite okay but you really feel this is a young NAS. Lots of alcohol and just a hint of sweetness.
Ein typischer Zacapa mit leicht rauchiger Note. Ein wenig weniger süßlich als der Etiqueta Negra. Alles in allem eine gute Abstimmung. Ich finde dass er sein Geld wert ist.
Typical Ron Zacapa taste, but more smoky. Some people may love this. For me it was OK. Good one but I am not convinced of the price-performance-ratio.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

I did not think that I would like this heavily smoked rum. but I gave it a try anyway. Many compare this one to their Zacapa 23, but that one is long forgotten by me and will never be bought again. I recently had their much better Ron Zacapa XO which ranks in my top 10 percent of all rums that I have reviewed. This one? Well not quite. It is good, but just not worth it's $62 US price tag. It appears to be made from distilled sugar cane juice and and aged at high altitude in double charred barrels. At first taste, it is like WOW! Then it becomes more smoke than rum, but not quite to the point of being sickening. Dare I say this, but just add a few drops of liquid smoke to your favorite dry rum and save yourself lots of change. For lovers of peat heavy single malts from Islay, I can recommend this rum to those. However, I would much rather spend my money on a bottle of Lagavulin 16 Single Malt than this rum in hiding.
A few weeks later, I tried like hell to find the best way to drink this one and could not. Well, since two wrongs can often make one right, I added the overly sweetened Kaniche Perfeccion to this one. At first, it was a 50/50 mixture. Then I tried 5 parts of this rum to 3 parts of the Kaniche Perfeccion. Voila! That combo suddenly became drinkable. However, I won't buy either one again because one should not have to go through these experiments just to make pricey rums drinkable.
