I like this rum as I find its taste to be different from other rums. It's not groundbreaking or anything but a very solid cheap rum.
When in Cuba drink as Cubans drink. Cheap, easy to find, easy to drink.
Nice mixer, well priced.
Great with cola / Cuba Libre.
Sugar: 5 gpl. Similar to the Atlantico from the DR but not as sweet. Fairly smooth rum with tastes of butterscotch and vanilla. It's not overpowering or complex in flavour or aroma and that makes it an excellent rum for mixed drinks and is also a sipping rum if desired but there are so many good sipping rums that I would keep this as a mixer.
This rum is currently one of the best buys (value) you can get in Cuba. Does not sell internationally thus lacks the fame of the HC. However, I personally find it second to the HC7 but superior to all the younger HC siblings. Really good mixer and even a sipper for drinkers that don't mind a bit of the harshness in the afterburn that usually comes with Cuban rums. Not very complex like ED family but again for the ~10CAD (~8CUC) that costs in Cuba you just cannot do better. I cannot wait to try the more aged versions of it.
Herkomst: Cuba
Abv: 38%
Kleur: licht bruin
Aroma: karamel, hout.
Smaak: typische rum, gebeurt niet veel. Hout, tabak, vanille.
Nasmaak: zoethout.
Prima prijs/kwaliteit (β¬14) voor met cola. Puur ook goed te doen.
Best for Ron & Coca-Cola
Muy bueno para combinar
kolor,aroma,finish
Sweet smelling, an almost red wine like note.
"Finish whilst reasonably long is very one dimensional, oaky and bitter."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Well, Cuban rum is not just cheaper members of the Havana Club lineup - up to 7y, all with pronounced tobacco and wood. This is quite different style, and after an initial "shock and awe" period, I discovered a very smooth (for its age and price) and tasty rum here. The nose is quite unusual for rum, it reminds me of aged French calvados, contains chocolate, cocoa, a hint of oak, the taste is spicy yet smooth, pretty straightforward, light, with a hint of vanilla and chocolate, maybe some tobacco, the finish is mild spices, with oaky Calvados, medium long, ending with a red wine dryness. It shares some similarity with Conde de Cuba 5y or 7y, but it is more crispy, spicy, well defined and quite a lot cheaper. It shares also some traits with Cubay Anejo, which is good news - Cubay Anejo is an embodiment of excellent Cuban rum for a reasonable price. I can sip it, it makes neat rum and coke, and for its price, some 20% more than Captain Morgan - it is just perfect. No sugar detected.
