I have never had any Mount Gay rums yet, but this one was expensive, seemingly well aged and got a really high rating on here. I asked for it as a gift(because of the price) and it seems to be what everyone is saying it is. Definitely less sweet than the Barbados rums I’m use to, but definitely not any less flavorful. It will be hard to follow this one up when it comes to other Mount Gay expressions, but then again, maybe I won’t even need to
It`s oak, vanilla, leather some spices, not sweet. But I can't find in taste triple cask, perhaps maturation was short.
Bought this because of it's Barbados history, and it will be a regular in my cabinet. Beautiful color, subtle sweetness, at an excellent price point.
Tasted at Laka Lono July 23, 2023
Appearance: amber
Aroma: brown sugar, caramel, band-aid, mandarin. This reminds me of the orange flavor brachs filled toffees of the 70s
Flavor: peaty, funky, caramel, a delightful medley of flavor. This is a great sipper, I know I will enjoy it as a Rickie, and would be lovely in many many recipes
This rum is very smooth. There’s a sweet fruity tobacco nose that lends itself well into the taste. This almost like a vanilla infused pipe tobacco. I’ll have to revisit this one and update my review as I’m simply doing a quick taste in a glencairn glass. The Mount Gay XO lineup has been my favorite rums to date, and this sits well with those others.
This rum is a great one, I think. It has some whiskey tones, some fruit, somw sweetness. An all around great rum that doesn't go crazy in either direction. It might be boring to some, but I think it does everything right, if perhaps not very interesting.
I'd give it an 8,5, but the average here is 8,1, so I won't hesitate to bump it up into a 9.
Edit: times change. It's still solid, but it's an 8. 9 is a bit on the forgiving side.
Let's start with the price to justify my title: I've been made aware that this rum is priced vastly differently in different regions, I've heard numbers up to £ 70. I found my bottle for 38 €, which is approximately half of that. At £ 70 I would probably give this more of a 9 than a 10, as it'd have to stand up to some more premium, limited edition bottlings. But at 38 €, I don't think it can be beat.
My, obviously always under-qualified, tasting notes are more of the same of what people have written here already: Starts out with some nice sweetness and vanilla (but no added sugar as far as I know), then moves into (for me indiscernible) baking spices, and finishes with some nice wood notes. I'd say the finish is medium-long in length, it doesn't go on for days, but it is quite satisfying. This rum is somehow both sweet and dry, for me noticeably in that order. It's my favorite sipper for a "normal" day, when you want something absolutely delicious, but don't want to get out the bottles that break the bank. It's basically what I thought Plantation XO was before tasting this, as much as it hurts to admit that. If you're looking for something distinctly sweet, get something more sugared. This tastes like a real rum, and like a phenomenal one at that.
Yet another excellent rum from Mount Gay. Has all of the standard attributes, such as smooth, vanilla, oaky, caramel etc. and sweet, but not too sweet. Comparable to my regular tipple of Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva, but unfortunately substantially more expensive in the UK. For that reason alone, it won’t become one of my regular tipples.
Having loved the black barrel and reading the reviews thought this was going to be a step up, but I was disappointed...
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label
