How many cheap rums made it to your rating of 8 or higher?
For those of you with 100 ratings or more, how many rums costing less than $30 US have made it to your rating of 8 or higher? In my case, it is 6 out of my 49 ratings at 8 or higher.
Anyone can spend the big bucks and have a really good chance of rating them at 8 or higher, but it is a matter of luck to find cheap rums winding up with the big boys. And this luck is what makes this journey worthwhile!
For those familiar with my posts, I have often said that if one spends $80 US or more on a rum, it had damn well wind up with a rating of 8 or higher. As you can see from the enclosed chart of 27 expensive rums plotted, only 13 got my rating of 8 or higher and another 5 almost made it. This makes it a 2 out of 3 chance that these expensive rums will satisfy. On the flip side, four of them were really sorry purchases.
What were the 6 rums that ended up making the cut?
Personally, I take price into account for my rating so if I have a decent rum that is around the $30USD ($37CAD) point it will automatically be bumped up a couple points. I agree with what you said, an expensive rum better be damn tasty. Conversely, in my opinion, if a cheap rum is damn tasty, all the better!
Personally I have never found any decent rums in Canada under $37 CAD ($30 USD) but have found what I consider cheap (under $50 CAD) rums in Canada that I really enjoy and have scored an 8 +, they are:

Conversely, when trying to find a good cheap rum with a rating of 7, one's chances get very slim. There is a lot of crap for sale out there, which is why this site is needed.
I wish I could get plantation OFTD for that cheap haha! Blackwells & ED8 are on my list to buy.

Those are all good cheap choices, but prices up there in Canada are much higher than down here in southeast Louisiana. Our Cajun ancestors actually came from Nova Scotia, where Jagsroy is from.
As for MGXO, it has been replaced by MGXO Triple Cask. I personally like this one much better than the original. Reviews on it are mixed between love and hate.

As for my favorite of Hamilton Florida Rum Society, I just made an 800 mile round trip to stock up on another year;s worth of that rum (7 bottles at $27 each). It is 35% Worthy Park Jamaican and 65% Guyanese Demerara blended perfectly. You may be able to order this one from the Florida Rum Society web page. I cannot have any spirits sent to where I live, nor can I send any.
MGXO was discontinued and replaced by MGXO Triple Casks ($99 CAD) with a blend not as old or good as MGXO. Glad I bought several bottles prior to being discontinued. Still have 5 MGXO unopened.

I did say "our Cajun ancestors" and not mine. This means south Louisiana as a whole. My ancestors actually came from France and they were flat broke.
Appleton 12 rare and Mount Gay XO were available for 25 to 35 €uros here. They are fitting perfect in this category.
