It is not often that I spend more than $50 US on a bottle of rum, but at those prices it needs to be exceptional to qualify as an occasional guilty pleasure. Only the first two in my list of rankings below qualify to be bought again in the future. All are ranked in order with my rating to the left. Even if I had unlimited funds, I would still only buy those first two again. 10 Dictador XO Insolent 10 Dictador 20 8 Ron Zacapa XO 8 Appleton 21 7 Diplomatico Batch Kettle No. 1 7 Foursquare Zinfandel Cask 7 Angostrua 1824 7 Ron Cartavio XO 6 Rhum J M VSOP 6 Foursquare 2004 Single Blend 11 Year 6 Don Q Gran Anejo 4 Clement 10 Year 4 Gosling's Family Reserve Old

Well, depending on where you live, you can hardly find a bottle of rum below 50$ 😉 But I know what you mean. Well known brands are often heaviliy overprized, (just as they are in other sectors). And some brands think, adding an XO or any number higher than 15 on the label will give them the right to double the prize. But the taste of this rums is usually not twice as good as the younger variants.

I am very fortunate to live in a place where very good rums can be purchased for between $30 and $50. Very few that cost more are really worth the extra money. It is up to all of us on this site to reveal all of the unscrupulous things rum brands use to try and get our money.

Velier Royal Navy Old Rum http://thefatrumpirate.com/velier-royal-navy-old-rum Managed to procure a bottle, it's the ultimate rum experience. Well worth the high price of about 150 euro.

I don’t know. To me, La Favorite La Filibuste, St. Nicholas Abbey 18 yo, Appelton Estate Joy, Rhum JM 15 yo, 1999 and Caroni 2000 are perhaps the best rums I’ve ever had and are much more than 50.00 but well worth every penny. Just my opinion.

Why didn’t the Zacapa make your re purchase list? Curious because I have a bottle that I quite like, although I find that it leaves me with a bit of a headache.

Immiketoo: When the concert refunds from cancelled shows started to recently roll in, I splurged to get one more bottle of Ron Zacapa XO to the tune of $94 US. It lasted all of 5 days. On the other hand, I bought one bottle of Zacapa 23 about two years ago and swore that this sugar bomb would be my last Z23. I hated that one.

It’s funny, because after reading a bunch of reviews and this discussion, I had to go have a glass of Zacapa just to be sure :) I’m now on the prowl for a bottle of Dictador Insolent

Immiketoo: This morning, I got word that a newly opened liquor store has another highly rated rum that I have not tried in stock. It is going for only $73! I will be there when the door opens this morning! As for the Dictador Insolent, you may find some on clearance because the sticky film on the painted bottle puts people off. I poured the contents of my XO Insolent into an empty bottle of Dictador 12 and used the XO silver cap instead. Much better! Compared to my Dictador 20, all of the coffee notes have been removed for the XO Insolent. It was indeed worth the $80 US clearance price!

Paul, I have to admit that a nice looking bottle is part of the appeal for me and that when I saw the ugly bottle of the Dictador, I was surprised. However, I have a good number of empty bottles I can use as proper receptacles :) I hope my local rum pusher has some in stock. I’m looking forward to trying it and I’m glad to hear there are no coffee notes. I don’t care for them really.
