Guatemala | Aged | 40% ABV | Column Still (1-4)
Ron Zacapa 23 Solera Rum was created in 1976 in the highlands of Guatemala, where it is distilled in a copper-lined column still from fresh cane juice before solera aging.
The 500 year-old Spanish Sistema Solera method is used to age Ron Zacapa 23 in white oak casks. This results in a combination of rums aged between 6 and 23 years.
The current Ron Zacapa 23 bottle features a woven band around the middle, which is in reference to the original hand woven palm leaf petate bottle cover that covered the bottle.

It's a typical sweet rum. Should probably be considered a rum liqueor. I know some people enjoy very sweet rums - if you're one of them, maybe give it a try. I have to rate this low, though, it's just not for me.
Quality has changed in the last few year, the pricetag has mantained-increased
Very deceiving rum period. It's like lets mix and match and pray. I can hear them saying "Those idiots see the 23 & its a sale". Steer clear of this mismatch. Let me add that I see alot of high ratings? If I was a beginner (novice) I might misjudge this also. Sorry my rating stands!
Seems some people like this rum and some people don't like the type at all. I tend towards the not at all crowd. My bottle have a strong aftertaste of harsh alcohol. Not smooth at all. It reminds me a bit of whiskey, which is good if you want whiskey I guess, but I don't like that taste in my rum. I guess it's from the cask. I like other rums which claim to have strong cask taste though so it's a bit strange.
This rum is as much the base line to critic a lot of molasses rums as well as maybe the easiest entrance to the world of rums.
Yep this is a great rum. But compared to other great rums I had this one is in the middle of them. It doesn't stand out that it needs to. It have an sweet oak smell of vanilla and spices. The taste is smooth and sweet with vanilla, caramel and toffee. But something is missing. Maybe it needs to age more. But a good rum to a good price.
First, I'm glad that I bought the 50mL bottle. It is tasty....watery super sweet sugarcane syrup with some alcohol on it...I'm sorry. I think it is potstill distillation which yields a rich and flavorfull rum....it has those characteristics but they are thrown away with all the additives they put into. Neat, I don't like it and it would be a waste for whatever you put it into.
You always need that wingman...and the ZR23 does not disappoint. I agree with most reviewers about its slight sweetness, but it is well worth it. It's a go to at most bars that only have your regular house rum and regular mix Bacardi/Capt Morgan.
Nice color and aroma but nothing compared to the smoothness of the XO. It's quite drinkable but isn't my first choice. Just a little to much alcohol bit for me. The XO is worth the extra price.
To me this rum has it all, sweetness of molasses, hint of oak and very smooth without being weak. Recommend to everyone and with a price of $44 where I live I put it well ahead of any comparable brandy or bourbon. I have tasted a better, but not many and nothing in that price range. When I introduce people to rum, this is what we taste last as the finale.
Actually quite dry and oaky.
"Flavour builds if you leave the rum in your mouth for a little longer allowing it to coat the palate."
Wonderfully intricate with honeyed butterscotch, spiced oak and raisined fruit...

"The interplay between the wood of the barrel and the liquor contents gives the alcohol its flavour, colour and character..."

Decanted, the rum displays a surprising body in the glass for something so apparently light, and has slow and strong legs down the side of the glass.

Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Not much to say about this rum, I think anyone who has ever tasted it will agree with me that it really is one of the best rums ever made
