Guatemala | Aged | 40% ABV | Column Still (1-4)

Ron Zacapa 23 Solera Rum was created in 1976 in the highlands of Guatemala, where it is distilled in a copper-lined column still from fresh cane juice before solera aging.

The 500 year-old Spanish Sistema Solera method is used to age Ron Zacapa 23 in white oak casks. This results in a combination of rums aged between 6 and 23 years.

The current Ron Zacapa 23 bottle features a woven band around the middle, which is in reference to the original hand woven palm leaf petate bottle cover that covered the bottle.

Remember that time you were throwing back Malibu Coconut Rum pina coladas, and Malibu with pineapple juice, like you were drinking Koolaid? And all of a sudden, you feel like you got punch in the face and land on the floor. Well that's the same feeling you'll have if you sleep on this Zacapa 23. It's not for the faint of heart.

Zacapa 23 is made by some kick butt Guatemalans that had the courage to age their molasses in sky (7544 feet above sea level) for some where between 6 and 23 years (who cares), and it shows. Zacapa 23 is smooth, but strong. Strong, but drinkable. It's that beautiful color you see when the sun sets and rises. Yes, it's a sweet (rich) sipping rum, but if sipping is not your thing, order it up in a mojito. The bartender may give you a strange look in some parts of the world, but that's because he wants you to stick to the basics...like Bacardi Mojito. Live a little, people.

Trop agressif et peu de subtilité de goûts et arômes. J'ai fini la bouteille dans du Coca.

Intense tobacco smell, deep and rich. This rum is excellent sipper, but way overpriced.

Compared to premium rums, this one feels almost like a cheaper liqueur with rum taste. (almost..) The taste isn't whole nor complex, it's rather a mix of different ingredients somewhat working together. I guess some people might like it.. Maybe I'll give it another try some other time..

Love it how it's not to strong, not to weak and has an awesome taste.

Like Diplomatica Exclusiva Reserva, this is bordering on a liqueur rather than a proper rum, so again it understandably divides opinion. Of the two, I've given this the lower rating - mainly because it costs 25% more without being particularly better in my opinion.
The stylish bottle and packaging are a very nice touch, but the misleading '23 solera' rating (meaning the oldest rum in the blend is 23 years old, not the average age or youngest, as you may understandably assume) does grate a little.

Nice rum, bit smokey, soft in the beginning with a slight burn afterwards.

It's an okay rum but what really surprised me is the strong smell and taste of alcohol. The sweetness and the molasses only come through as an aftertaste. I've had rums that were 55% and tasted less of alcohol so that really makes this rum average at best.
Still quite enjoyable though!

Edit; this rum really benefits from being out (how do you say that in English? Tumble?) for a while, it really helps bring out the suppleness of this rum and rids it of the intense alcohol taste
