Ron Zacapa 23 Solera

The smooth king, quite sweet.
Strong caramel and vanilla notes.

Sipping over ice reduces the sweetness and makes it prefect in my opinion.

Got one from my friends for a promotion that I've earned. Kept one year in the cabinet. Then finally tested and emptied within one night. I must say that for me truly fantastic :). Smooth, not to sweet, and no too bitter just perfect. Great sipper! Surely something worth returning to. In terms of aroma... gently woody not that sharp as for instance Abuelo Double Oaks

Drank with a little ice, was very smooth with a subtle after taste.

Fantastic rum no need to put a mixer with it as so smooth.

It is most certainly a pleasant tipple, but there are much better rums available at no where near the price you pay for this. It’s a little sweet, slightly rough and excessively caramel. It also has an oddly artificial taste, that makes you wonder what has been added to it. If you like sweet rums, I would opt for a bottle of Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva, which is 30% cheaper and far better, or if you like a bit of a burn, go for a bottle of El Dorado 12 yr old, which is also 30% cheaper and far better.

Hi rum lovers. I've been a lover of rums since I had my first entanglement with Captain Morgan when I was a teenager. I think eyes liked it more than my young system did. Over indulging, I was sick for days. I had the Dr's thinking it was appendix. I couldn't tell mum because that would have been bad news for my bottom :). I can't even smell the stuff now. I stay well clear. Sorry CM, it goes like that sometimes.

About 15 years ago I was in the bar at Shakespeare's Globe, London and a barman suggested I try a 'Dark n stormy'. I haven't looked back. A version of his drink has been my goto drink ever since. Havana Especial, ginger beer, (not ale as some bar persons make the mistake of doing) a twist and a slice of lime. With the scraped lime outer skin rubbed around the edge of the glass. It is simply divine.

Perhaps 10 years ago I started down the road of premium rums with an Eldorado 12. I've tried many and several since then but my goto premium if I had to choose one for the rest of my life at a fairly reasonable price point would be the Ron Zacapa 23. It was therefore quite a shock to come here and find out about the sugar content and colouring. Many thanks to those reviewers for taking the time to provide that information.

I sat back in my chair in the hotel room I'm currently staying in and really and truly didn't know what to make of it. All these years. alongside the Eldorado 12 and Diplomatico Reserva, the Zacapa 23 has been my favourite. I always pick it up when in a duty free somewhere and always have it at Christmas. I was gutted by that news but in the end I have accepted that I still love it. It may have added sugar and colouring but I still enjoy the complexity of absolutely delicious tastes. There is nothing like it at the price point in my view. The closest being the Diplomatico. Large bottomed whiskey tumbler. a large cube of ice and I feel like I'm having a special moment.

I think based on the rums I've mentioned, It might be safe to say I have a sweet tooth but this rum is not, IMO, over rated. Only, if you don't like it I'd suggest. Don't get me wrong... if price was no option I'd always have the Zacapa XO but that is a rear treat and one I can't justify to often. So if you're in duty free at the moment and you've taken the time to read my essay :) I'd say, don't give it a second thought. Jump on it and enjoy.

This was the first "premium" rum I ever bought a bottle of...from my local grocery store. It was quite an eye opener compared to the Sailor Jerry, Rondiaz, Malibu, etc.

Quite smooth and moderately (to my taste) sweet, I didn't find Zacapa 23 to have any particularly strong or notable flavors. Mild alcohol burn, sugarcane sweet, and a little caramel and vanilla. Eminently sippable - I drank the whole bottle straight while it lasted on my shelf.

Bought a bottle after doing a rum testing with revolucion de Cuba during lockdown. I was always a fan of diplomatico but this smooth rum with nodes of chocolate (great to pair with) and caramel blew me away. Well priced for its quality and nice unique bottle too

A bartender once told me this is the best rum in the world. Just another example of the hyped up reputation this rum has vs. the actual product. Not sure what the 23 stands for, but certainly not for the age of the content. And then there's the added stuff: sugar? Some artificial flavors perhaps? Then there's the price...50 euros?! I had better rums for half the price. And last...the score: 7.5 ??? For this? Not a chance.
