Pusser's British Navy ”Nelson’s Blood” 15-Year rum

Pusser's British Navy ”Nelson’s Blood” 15-Year

Virgin Islands, British | Aged | 40% ABV

Pusser’s British Navy Rum 15-Year is a blend of five rums from Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad and Barbados which are produced in mainly wooden pot stills. The blend is aged for 15 years.

The company derives its name from the British Navy 'Purser' who distributed a daily 'tot' of rum ration to each sailor - a tradition which lasted from 1655 until 1970. In 1979 Charles Tobias obtained the rights to blend the original recipe of the British Navy Rum.

Pusser's British Navy Rum is casually known as “Nelson’s Blood” as a nod to the famous death of Admiral Nelson. After being mortally wounded in a naval battle in 1805, Nelson’s body was preserved in a barrel of rum.

Cracking rum, this!
The first thing I noticed was the lovely smell. It has a strong oak and molasses aroma to it with some tropical fruit in there too.
On the taste, well first of all it's... really good! That's the first thing you notice. It has a mixture of sweetness and bitterness which is quite interesting and seems to come and meander in and out over the time that you drink it - even more interesting. There is oak and molasses, fruit (particularly banana and pineapple), a hint of raisin and date. The aftertaste is an interesting slow fade of rooibos tea, with a tingle on the tip of the tongue - a sweetness and a sort of coffee and tobacco bitterness sailing around in there too.
It is a much more viscous rum than most - it has sticky legs and is a little syruppy - but not too sweet. Any sweetness here is balanced out.
If it's not far off what the British Navy drank, no wonder they were not keen to lose the Rum Ration in 1970!! Though I think what they had was not quite as good as this - aside from the Captains and Admirals.

Comme première impression, le rhum est assez ordinaire, manque de rondeur et de complexité, Avec un long contact a l'air, ce rhum devient très doux et développe une bonne complexité.

I passed this over so many times through the years simply because of the words "Navy Rum". I guess I pictured Navy rum as being nothing more than flavored gasoline. You know. Rough and Tough. The words "Overproof" and "Gunpowder Proof" didn't help matters much either. After seeing so many glowing reviews of the "Nelson's Blood" I had to give it a try and I'm sure glad I did. This Navy rum has turned out to be one of my favorites. I love the flavor and aroma of wood in certain rums and Pusser's 15 does wood superbly. It will truly be a sad day when the few remaining wooden pot stills cease production. We will be loosing a taste of the past that will never be accurately reproduced by using other methods.

This is to date the best rum I’ve ever tasted. It is smooth yet stout. I recommend drinking this neat with a spoonful of water. The nose is delightful with hints of sweetness. The mouth is truly memorable and the finish is clean and smooth like a fine wine. The only negative and it’s not too bad is a wee bit sweet and sugary but then again it is rum. I would drink this straight and not lessen its greatness with a mixer. Absolutely the best rum for the price

No nezklamal !! Je to silný a moc dobrý rum s příjemnou sladkostí a nádhernou barvou. Všem doporučuji !!

At first I was surprise by kinda strong woody tones (unique taste for sure). But my journey ended with a happy end. I like trying a different feel but it didn’t end with the happy end in this case.

Very strong smell, strong flavour of oak and and as another reviewer mentioned I also got a bit of mango.

Surprisingly it goes down nice and easy. Got to the end of the dram and wanted another.
