Plantation XO 20th Anniversary

A little sweet, vanilla and a tad bit of coconut. Long lasting flavor after a sip that is smooth and has no burn. Defibantely up here in my top picks.

Reading the reviews—both here and on other sites—this appears to be a nearly universally-adored rum. And why not? It's incredibly smooth. A tad too sweet (like many Plantations), but not syrupy. Definitely the "bigger sibling" of the Barbados 5-year. Layers of complexity (roasted caramel, vanilla, hint of banana). Great flavor of chocolate, caramel, and spices). Chewy texture. Satisfyingly lingering finish (very chocolatey). Gorgeous, heavy bottle. Decent price-point. What's not to like?

Edit (4/2017): Having finished the bottle, I ended up less enamored with it than when I began. Sure, it's super complex, and the presentation is beautiful, but that sugar... I got really tired of it after a while. I've got half a mind to change my rating to a 7, especially given the price-point and competition with what I see as better-balanced rums. I imagine that the raw materials Plantation is working with is some good, well-aged stuff, but that's obscured by the sweetness. I would never turn this bottle down, and it seems to be a crowd-pleaser that's unlikely to be tinkered with anytime soon, but I do see clear room for improvement. 8-.

Edit (6/2017): The more rums I try, and the more I think about my enjoyment of the bottle when I was finishing it compared to when I opened it, the more I feel this is a big lost opportunity for Plantation. (It's not, of course, judging by the rating—currently 8.7, and among the most-rated rums on this site.) But as for me and many others, I would be far more interested in a "pure" rum, without the "dosage" Plantation is so keen on adding, and with enough alcohol that it's actually got some bite, some character. This rum is delicious, it's even very good, but it's simply not great, and is too dear for me to justify picking up another bottle as a "dessert" rum. 7

This is my second bottle in my journey into the aged rum world. My first bottle was Diplomatico RE and I prefer that over the Plantation. I tend to like sweeter drinks, and the Plantation, although very good, just didn't quite hit the mark for me.

Very good taste , not so strong. great with cigar.

If anyone tells you that rum is not his cup of tea, just give him this one and watch him changing his mind very quickly and asking you for another glass.

Everything about this rum is wonderful. Great sipper and even greater at it price point.

Plantation XO 20th Anniversary is een blend van de oudste Bajan Rum die het merk bezit, special geselecteerde rum uit de Caraïben die hebben gerijpt in ex-bourbon vaten. De blended rum wordt na het blenden nogmaals gerijpt, ditmaal in kleine, Franse eikenhouten vaten voor een periode van 12 tot 18 maanden. Deze dubbele rijping geven ruimte aan de rum om smaken en karakter beter en voller te laten ontwikkelen wat het resultaat ten goede komt.

De kostbare inhoud van Plantation XO 20th Anniversary komt in een prachtig karaf die afgesloten wordt door een synthetische kurk die de fles perfect afsluit. Het karaf toont de verleidelijke rijke kleur van koper en maakt nieuwsgierig naar de smaak.

Aroma’s van karamel en geroosterde kokosnoot die ondergedompeld zijn in een pittige eikenhout geur openen en worden gevolgd door sinaasappel marmelade en hints van marsepein met tabak. Tonen van bruine suiker, vanille en een vleugje kaneel en nootmuskaat bieden balans en harmonie voor de neus.

Een vloeiende overgang van aroma’s naar palet, een volle en verwarmende smaak van gekruid eikenhout opent met een romige honing/karamel smaak. Sinaasappelschil en marmelade en tonen van donker fruit zoals rozijnen, dadels en pruimen worden gecombineerd met tonen van chocolade en vanille.

Vloeibaar snoep dat eindigt in een zoete, karamel smakende afdronk die lang aanhoudt met heerlijke tonen van pure chocolade en een ondertoon van eikenhout. Heerlijk!

Geschiedenis Plantation rum:

Oorspronkelijk uit Azië , werd suikerriet in de Caribische geïntroduceerd door de Spaanse kolonisten tijdens Christoffel Columbus ' tweede reis in de late 15de eeuw .

De eerste schriftelijke vermelding van rum is afkomstig van Barbados in 1647 , maar het is bekend dat rum werd gemaakt op het eiland aan het begin van de 17e eeuw . In de Franse Antillen kwam de uitvinding van rum later en wordt toegeschreven aan Père Labat in 1694 , als een geneeskrachtig middel .

Van slechte kwaliteit en goedkoop te maken, was rum in eerste instantie alleen voor de plantage slaven. Duurdere cognac en sherry waren gereserveerd voor de kolonisten . Het werd ook de drank van zeelieden en piraten, maar rum begon niet te groeien tot de 18de eeuw, toen de reële vooruitgang met destillatie technieken werd gemaakt om zich te verspreiden naar Europa en Noord-Amerika .

Vandaag de dag rum is de meest geconsumeerde gedistilleerde alcohol in de wereld . Het is gemaakt op elk continent , in Azië , Latijns-Amerika , Oceanië , Europa en zelfs Afrika en het Midden-Oosten , maar de meest gewaardeerde rum komt ongetwijfeld uit het Caribisch gebied .

Balanced, rich and smooth. Quite sweet, but when overall it is so tasty, I'm willing to give them the benefit of doubt as to what makes it so sweet. The bottle is nice and unique. Too bad I can't find it locally. Will buy again the next time I'm in the US. The price is definitely justified.
