The only Gosling's rum available locally is Gosling's Black Seal and frankly I was not all that impressed with it. I've read the hype and felt it didn't come close to living up to it. I can across the Gosling's Family Reserve rum at Dorignac's grocery store in New Orleans and decided to get a bottle to try. I am finally getting around to sampling it.

First a word on the presentation...this is old school at its finest. The deep green glass champagne bottle is sealed with a thick black wax which includes a wide pull band to help unseal the wax. Each bottle is label with its own bottle number (mine is 5867/14) and is placed in a straw-filled wooden box. Homage to the old school.

Pouring the rum into a snifter revealed just how dark this rum is. Almost like new motor oil (and I do NOT mean that in any negative way -- just that the hue is a rich, dark brown of a type reminding me of how certain motor oils look). The aroma is sharp and crisp revealing a pepperiness that becomes apparent on the initial flavor. Some sweetness along with the peppery sting and a buttery texture. There clearly are other flavors but the pepperiness obscures them too much for me to detect what they are (others with more refined palates than mine will have to chime in). Some oak tones as well but mild. The finish is a bit dry and the oak stays with you. Very smooth with not a burn but a nice warmth that is far from overbearing. Personally I would not choose this as a sipping rum but it definitely qualifies as one. It's not for everyone but it is a pretty good rum. I know I may ruffle some feathers but even though this is a premium rum I like it quite well in Coke Zero. The pepperiness complements the Coke Zero flavor making for a unique combination. Add a little lime and you've got an awfully good Cuba Libre. But at approximately $70 (USD) a bottle it's kind of an expensive Cuba Libre.

Initial smell is nice with sweet aroma but initial flavor misses but almost a second later you get a smooth, warming sensation of caramel sweetness that is enjoyable. Cool numbered bottle in cool case.

Has a rounded sweet almost caramel taste on the front of the tongue, and a slight oaky taste at the back. Goes down smooth as water, no burn to speak of. If it wasn't for the price I could easily consume half a bottle of this in an evening as it's so easy to drink. Fantastic.

This is RICH!! Whoever said the aroma fills a whole room, they're not kidding! It's powerful and just keeps coming! Carries heavy notes of molasses (duh), but underneath there's some tobacco, fresh bread and cinnamon. Smooth and friendly as you drink it, which definitely isn't something I can say for most other blackstraps. Palate again gives you that big ol' molasses taste (shocker), but it carries basically everything underneath it. When I say everything, I mean marshmallow, coffee, woodsmoke, cinnamon, something metallic, and some apple as well. The finish then comes in, not too strong, but is curiously oily and tangy at the same time. I'm doing my best to describe it, but I know I'm not doing a good job... You really can't imagine what this rum is like until you try it. (That means go try it!!)

Tasted it in a restaurant after the meal. Liked it. Colour cherry-like and some "fruit" to it (lightly). Spicy and smooth as a good old rhum. Nothing outstanding however.

Got this at Duty Free in Bahamas and glad I picked it up. Very smooth with a great sugar aroma. Notes of dried fruits (raisins & dates), with hints of chocolate.

Love the bottle presentation (wax seal) and wood box.

I read the reviews here and gave it time to breathe.....well, the second glass I did!!

Initially as soon as I opened the bottle, I got a bit of pear drops and bananas on the nose coupled with spice, caramel and oak. This was carried through to the pallet where the caramel took on more burnt notes. Very smooth and well integrated attack from the alcohol, giving a good depth and length. Very good. After breathing in the glass, the pear drops disappear off the nose. There is a mix of spice, wood, caramel. This is carried through on the palate where the alcohol gives a firm but gentle kick. A lovely long warming finish.

For all the good packaging (even if I am not a fan of the black bottle) this is too expensive.

I started with a sample. Towards sweet, a prune and raisin xmas cake, vanilla flavours with a light oaky after-aroma. Hardly any alcohol burn and does seem to benefit from a short rest in the glass. Slightly sweetened.

This is hands down one of the most unique, full bodied rums I've had. It's a sticky, dark pour, and has a very potent nose full of aromatics. Starts off with cocao, molasses, smoke, and Oak. Finishes with a bit of a spicy cocao. Wonderful rum.
