Outstanding blended overproof rum. Perhaps the best or even better alternative for the hardly available (in europe) Lemon Hart 151. Great for tiki drinks. One of few Plantation rums without added sugar.

The nose is quite pleasant, not hot like one would expect. Caramel and molasses with warming alcohol. Fruity. The sweet aromas are subdued.
The flavor is a different ballgame! Very warming boarding on hot but low and behold a lot of flavor as well. Sweet molasses, hints of vanilla and oak. Not what I would call a sipper by any means but cut with water or on the rocks it may be considered by some. Not for the faint of heart in this context. Long softly bitter aftertaste that is quite enjoyable.
An excellent mixer when used in cocktails requiring an over proof rum. Plenty of pure rum character but not as hot or lacking in character as other readily available 'big name' over proof or '151' rums. I have yet to experience Hamilton 151 or Lemon Hart but these seem to be the only other over proofs that compare based on reviews.
If you're looking for a great over proof to use in 'tiki' drinks or other rum cocktails this is a great choice as it has great rum flavor and wonderful aromatics. For the price ($27 for a liter in Ohio-2019) it's hard to argue the value. A wholehearted thumbs up!
As an addendum the Plantation website stipulates 16 g/L dosage so it definitely has some sugar added. Not a sugar bomb by any means but I think it actually helps bring out the cursory aromatics that may be lost in the alcohol otherwise. I like the fact that Plantation is transparent in their dosage. It's not deceptive as in the case with other distiller/bottlers.
9/19- I find that like this on it's own more and more. A cube of ice is all it needs if you're looking for something big, bold and full of flavor give this a shot. Still, not for the faint of heart!

Plantation does not disappoint on this one! At 69% this rum has far more complexity then most at far less abv. O.F.T.D. Is defined in my own words as Oh.Fuck.Thats.Delicious. This dark overproof rum makes some kick ass Cuba Libres and painkillers. Would recommend to anyone that wants a cocktail with more oomph.

Sugar: Estimated at 17 -20 GPL. Wow, does this ever sneak up on you! Wonderful aroma and taste but look out for the punch that comes with it. Burnt Sugar, dark chocolate, vanilla and raisins are the major flavours that I found. It's very smooth and you can drink it straight up but make sure you have a glass of water nearby to put out the fire. As a mixer this would be awesome. I would have more to say about that except that it's not available in Ontario and I was limited to just a taste at an out of town rum bar. It's on the shopping list for sure. You need to have one in your bar for the bold drinkers.

Litet alkoholbett.
Ganska kort torr eftersmak. Blir som vanligt inte besviken på Plantation.

Overproof rum is a world on its own, and it is certainly not for the faint of heart. With that being said, if you enjoy the burn, then you will probably love this edition from Plantation.

Nose: Plum, caramel and a light funk infused with banana bread
Taste: Very rich taste of maple, overripe fruit and a nice smoky body. Long warm aftertaste that spreads from the mouth, not only to the throat, but the whole body.
Overall: This rum is really something special. The 69% abv is something, that will scare of some people, and that is understandable, but if you are up for it you will get a tasting experience like no other.

One of the finest oaked overproof blends, and an incredible value. I picked this up for $26 / liter. It has an incredible high ester note, rich notes of dark caramel, raisins, brown sugar, and a satisfying burn. Diluted half and half with water, it still proves a bit potent for sipping, but that's not the intent in this blend. This is The Go To for all things cocktail. It will leave an indelible mark on cocktails. It is an overproof blend that should be present in any committed rum collection.

Plantation may not make the rum they bottle, but I have yet to find a company that is better at the art of blending.

There are many uses for an overproof dark rum in the bar, with classic mixed drinks usually standing as primary. There are few options on the market, with Lemon Hart's 151 as the most famous. They all tend to follow the same scheme: Rich toffee, caramel, cinnamon, and spice with a whole lot of burn and explosiveness. Aromas can be overwhelming... Most have added sugar or molasses, and some form of coloring. The Guyana bottlings tend to be the most famous.

Bearing that in mind, this rum definitely doesn't disappoint, striking all the classic notes with great finesse. The nuances are nice, and tend to show up more when diluted in a tropical cocktail.

I experimented a bit and used it as the base for a Rhum Arrange, and it came out crazy... It was too much for most mixes or even neat, but with ginger beer... oh my.

A good one for the shelf.

I’m new at rum tasting, so please forgive me for being so shallow. I’ve tried a few rums until now and it’s usually the same commercial stuff: Appleton Estate V/X, Saint James Rhum Agricole, Brugal Ron Anejo, Barcelo Anejo, Abuelo Anejo, Havana Club 7, Bacardi 8... Nothing gets close to Plantation O.F.T.D.

At first, I’d say that it’s not so much for rookies. You have to know a bit about alcohol to be able to enjoy sipping it as is. Whether you come from a whisky, a cognac or a vodka tasting background, this one is nice to have to start with. It has obvious flavors. Obviously, you’ll find the molasses deeply rooted in the liquid. You’ll also find some caramel, some burnt sugar, some dried fruit and maybe some hints of fruit jam.

Some will mix it. Personally, I already have enough of other brands to mix cocktails. This one will remain well hidden behind bottles which are easier to get. I’ll save this liquid for cigar nights. Maybe I’ll add a few drops of water to mellow a bit the taste and find other hidden flavors.

I had the chance to try stuff as Zaya 12 and Zacapa Centenario 23. I can tell you that, even if I’ll have as much fun sipping all of those, I won’t get the same kind of pleasure. While the first two are mellow and easy drinking, full of delicate flavors, the Plantation O.F.T.D. 69 goes straight to the point with no tenderness. If you can hardly handle 40%, don’t go for it. If you can easily handle 40%, you’re good to try something new and you can find it, go for it.

Over here, it’s CAN$40.25 (about US$30.35). According to me (and I will remind you that I’m a rookie), this rhum is worth every penny.
