The nose is quite pleasant, not hot like one would expect. Caramel and molasses with warming alcohol. Fruity. The sweet aromas are subdued.
The flavor is a different ballgame! Very warming boarding on hot but low and behold a lot of flavor as well. Sweet molasses, hints of vanilla and oak. Not what I would call a sipper by any means but cut with water or on the rocks it may be considered by some. Not for the faint of heart in this context. Long softly bitter aftertaste that is quite enjoyable.
An excellent mixer when used in cocktails requiring an over proof rum. Plenty of pure rum character but not as hot or lacking in character as other readily available 'big name' over proof or '151' rums. I have yet to experience Hamilton 151 or Lemon Hart but these seem to be the only other over proofs that compare based on reviews.
If you're looking for a great over proof to use in 'tiki' drinks or other rum cocktails this is a great choice as it has great rum flavor and wonderful aromatics. For the price ($27 for a liter in Ohio-2019) it's hard to argue the value. A wholehearted thumbs up!
As an addendum the Plantation website stipulates 16 g/L dosage so it definitely has some sugar added. Not a sugar bomb by any means but I think it actually helps bring out the cursory aromatics that may be lost in the alcohol otherwise. I like the fact that Plantation is transparent in their dosage. It's not deceptive as in the case with other distiller/bottlers.
9/19- I find that like this on it's own more and more. A cube of ice is all it needs if you're looking for something big, bold and full of flavor give this a shot. Still, not for the faint of heart!

With some water, it opened up and revealed a nice palet of fruit

I can't sipping this but in a Mia Tia or an old fashion this baby shined.. it has a unique after taste I can't seem to figure out.. pair with artisan 3 star plantation rum and simple sugar with a citrus fruit and a splash of cola it really gets you where you're going.

Unlike Plantation's 73% ABV Original Dark Overproof comprised solely of Trinidad rums, O.F.T.D. (Old Fashioned Traditional Dark) is a new 69% ABV blend of rums from Jamaica, Guayana and Barbados. It tastes of burnt caramel, dark molasses and has a smokiness not usually found in rums. While this wouldn't be my first choice for a sipper, I think it will become an indispensable staple for the tiki repertoire.

I've been scared of overpoof rums because of Wray & Nephew and Smith & Cross. I love them, but they are strong and funky and I rarely use more than half an ounce in my cocktails. This rum is just straight delicious, and dangerous at this proof. Plantation Original Dark is one of my standard mixers. I expected this to be that with just the proof (read ethanol) dialed up, but the flavor is also dialed up proportionally. Wow.

Surprisingly smooth for an overprooof! Orange, dark chocolate and caramel on the nose and taste. Very long finish.

You won't drink much))) The eyes immediately round up. After the 1st glass, I want to stop and feel the aftertaste and smell the aroma. A complex and interesting rum without added sugar. .,.,.,.,.

It's just not my cup of tea. I don't like the Jamaican funk. This is the most funky Rum I've ever tasted.
Undrinkable.

Very complex, but young. Makes me think of a Foursquare ECS that's really rough around the edges.

I love using this one in cocktails, but it’s surprisingly palatable neat, too. Obviously the 69% alcohol are most noticeable, otherwise something would be off. But it doesn’t taste like just drinking ethanol, there’s definitely some deep flavors in there, for me most noticeably caramel. Fantastic in cocktails, just don’t go too overboard on the pour.

This bad boy is one of the best dark overproof rums on the market hands down. My favorite to float on any rum drink.
