Prefer this to Havana 7, and it’s easier to find...

EDIT: After having spent 10 days in Nicaragua, I’ve got a better appreciation for this expression. The base distillate from FdC is nothing to write home about, but they really shine with their aged rums, which indicates their barreling process is where it’s at. Their 7 year is a shining example of this; in my opinion, the best balance of flavor, strength and value. The complexity in flavor only increases from aged expressions from here on, with incremental changes imparting more mellowing tones akin to aged bourbons and whiskeys.

7 is best sipped, excellent unmasked in a spirit-forward cocktail and easy on the palate at 35% ABV. I’m unclear if there is dosage or if the barrel is charred, thus imparting sucrose from the caramelized wood, to add sweetness, but it’s literally just a perceptible touch to taste, and completely welcome when compared to Diplomático, Zacapa or Dictador. On that note, it’s an even better value and closer to a less adulterated example of this style aged rum. Totally unpretentious and versatile, 7 is a great starting point for getting into rum, experimenting with cocktails, cooking, pairing and sharing. It outdoes itself as an entry level rum and exemplar of Nicaraguan rum.

Makes a top shelf rum and coke. Great value in handle bottle.

I like all of the Flor de Cana products, they are solid and tend to be good values for their prices and over deliver. The Gran Reserve 7 is not my favorite FdC product but it is my favorite value from FdC. It sips well if in cold temps or hot and the price for the quality is hard to match.

Bottle: Tasteful appearance, old school charm.
Color: Light brown.
Bottle Smell: Vanilla comes first, some sweetness, the alcohol, and a hint of oak.
Glass: It doesn't change much except to lose some of the sweetness and show its age characters and become a solid oak aged rum.
Taste: Smooth, good oil levels allow you to taste the rum aged oak the label tells you to expect, typical caramel, vanilla hints and a not unpleasant throat.

This is a solid, good quality rum that is not far below in quality than bottles sold for more. This is my go to rum.

Not bad to drink alone but too expensive to use for mix

For me the 7 years old Flor de Cana is drinkable only mixed up, because he tastes in the finish like cheap hooch. Except the finish it is ok.

a nice sweet almost bourbon flavoured rum, nice with coke and lime.

Nothing that sets the world on fire, but by the same token, there's not much wrong with it either. Smooth enough, but lacks kick and length so over all is a little bit bleh!

Fellow rum enthusiasts may not agree with me, but I enjoy Flor de Cana in mixed drinks, especially Mojitos. I get such great joy ordering up a Flor de Cana Mojito at a bar when it's available. Depending on the bartender, you may be reminded that traditional Mojitos are made with white rum. Never fear to have something new.

Flor de Cana is smooth, smells great, slightly boozy, and can costs about $30 depending on where you do. If you are willing to pay $30 for a dark rum, there are other good options depending on if you want to sip or mix. I would advise you to spend no more than that on Flor de Cana.
