El Dorado Special Reserve 15-Year rum is crafted from 15 to 25 year old rums that are then blended and married together in bourbon oak casks. Prior to blending the original batches are distilled using 4 unique stills - the Enmore and Diamond Coffey stills, the Port Mourant double wooden pot still, and the Versailles single wooden pot still.
The bottle of El Dorado Special Reserve 15-year was inspired by the the old hand-blown flasks used by sugar planters on the banks of the Demerara river.

apparently this rum has undergone a formula adjustment and the older reviews are for a product with more added sugar (which I may have actually liked better but never tasted). With less sugar, this has a slightly bitter taste to it which I have been informed is due to the old stills that are used in its production. At first I was put off by the bitterness, but over the course of finishing off the bottle slowly I got more accustomed to it. This seems to be a very highly regarded rum, but to me it wasn't anything special, so I wonder if its high regards were based on the older formula that was more sweet.
This is about as good as it can get at this price point.
Nice smell of honey and caramel with tone of fruit, taste is great, full and smooth, fruit and sugar, really good end. 8/10
A beautiful and exceptional rum. Very spicy on the nose and in the mouth. It’s a sweet rum, with flavours of sweet fruits and hints of chocolate and vanilla, together with wood and oaky notes. Its sweetness is not excessive and relies on a very spicy fruity character. The aftertaste is long, spicy and especially warm
Lovely rum..full of flavours..coffee,chocolate etc..more full bodied than 12 and not far behind the 21 to be honest!😋
I much prefer this 15yr to it’s big brother the 21.
Happy to drink this straight at the end of the night. Nice. Not too sweet.
Very good sipping rum, either neat or on a rock or two. Great balance or sweetness with bite.
Full nose packed with dark coffee, candied orange, almonds, dark chocolate...
"El Dorado Special Reserve 15-Year rum review by Mike at Ultimate Rum Guide"
Has more oak and chocolate notes.
"It is initially very sweet, apples, bananas and rum soaked raisins but there are also some bittersweet plum like notes. The finish is spicy and fruity and long lasting."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

This rum is slightly different from the 12 Year old, but it does not add much other than some more imparted oak. For the difference in price ~$20 more for the 15 year old, it is not worth it. The 21 Year old is a lot pricier, but a great rum.
