Appleton Estate Extra 12-Year rum

Appleton Estate Extra 12-Year

Jamaica | Aged | 43% ABV

Appleton Estate 12-Year Rum is a blend of several rums aged between 12 and 18 years in American oak barrels after being distilled using small-batch copper pot stills.

The rum is produced on the Appleton Estate, which sits in the Nassau Valley in Jamaica. The estate’s origins date back as far as 1655 when the English overthrew the Spanish to rule the island and Frances Dickinson, grandfather of the distillery’s founders, received the land as a reward for his role in the overthrow.

Not as smooth as many, flavourful, but needs a mixer and lime/lemon

A workhorse rum! This is the staple in pretty much half of my tiki cocktails

Nice balance of oak and caramel, great on its own over an ice cube

It was my first experience with Jamaican rum. This is one of the rums that is easily recognizable. It's just something different than any other rum I've tasted. Rum is quite strong, but still smooth. The strong alcohol taste reminds me of pear brandy. Interesting rum, not for everyone. Definitely worth a try if you like fruit spirits.

On the nose: tropical ripe fruits and berries, molasses, brown sugar, some spices, oak, ripe red apple, some nuts.

On the palate: fruits, sugar cane, brown sugar, molasses, spices, tart, oak, light acidity, a bit tingling.

Finish: molasses, oak, spices, some dark chocolate, slightly tart, somewhat dry, weak acidity.

In der Nase: tropische reife Früchte und Beeren, Melasse, brauner Zucker, etwas Gewürze, Eiche, reifer roter Apfel, etwas Nüsse. Am Gaumen: Früchte, Zuckerrohr, brauner Zucker, Melasse, Gewürze, herb, Eiche, leichte Säure, etwas prickelnd. Im Abgang: Melasse, Eiche, Gewürze, etwas dunkle Schokolade, leicht herb, etwas trocken, schwache Säure.

Nose of ripe (or even overripe) banana with solvent-like notes, also reminding me of apples and calvados. Strong, dry taste with vanilla and spices, but no caramel no creamy mouthfeel. It's a particular taste and I can see why it's a classic, but I didn't like it that much.

Decent rum, not as sweet as some others, which is a nice change.

The rum has a slight orange or woody taste and is somewhat rough, it doesn't go down smoothly. It is nice to mix with ginger beer but the taste on its own is not very pleasant. For the price that it retails at, I would rather buy another rum for the same price but that has a more pleasant taste.

I do like this in a MaiTai - it’s a good all around Jamaican

a wonderful step up from the Signature. Baking spices, a lil Jamaican funk character. So good.
