A light colour compared to the 8 or 12 year with some burnt caramel smell. The taste is the same with that Appleton Jamacian funk, that is not really my thing. A spicey finish, with some burn. Not my idea of a sipping rum, best in a mixed drink. $52 @ LCBO

Let's try a good rum from the Appleton Estate distillery. 12 years old. Rare Blend: from whatever. This is not explained.
Alcohol: 43%

Nose: very fruity, banana, very typical esther notes, some honey. All in all pleasant
Palate: Eggnog ice cream, plum, pear, banana, orange peel, some wood
Finish: medium, the fruit notes fade away quickly, some wood remains. Hmm, I actually expected a little more

Conclusion: a really good rum to drink neat with interesting fruity impressions and a decent price-performance ratio

It's OK, but not smooth enough for my taste - you can feel the burning when it goes down the throat.

Tasted at Laka Lono Sunday, July 16 2023.
Aroma: pine and flammable but not like burning pine
Color: amber
Flavor: PineSol, sink cleaner, herbal: clove/tarragon, as it rests on the tongue it becomes more pleasantly funky.
Add a bit of water and it gets funkier faster.
For me this is not a beginning of the afternoon sipper, but I do believe by ten after midnight it would be perfect.
Guessing this is the perfect friend to many tiki drinks, especially if there is cinnamon involved.

My first Jamaican rum. I was encouraged to try this rum as many reviews mentioned it was quite light in the funk department so I thought it would be a good introduction.

I found the funk or hogo a little off-putting when I first tried it, and the second and third times. It wasn't unpalatable, but it was odd and quite different to my preferred styles of rum from Barbados, Venezuela and similar.

Adding ice, mixing it with cola and even in an old fashioned made little difference - the funk was still there. I decided to just drink it and move on. In the couple of weeks that followed it drank this almost exclusively so as to finish it sooner. However, after a few more tastings, I found myself not minding it so much and as I neared the end of the bottle I was actually quite liking it.

I'm glad I didn't pick a Jamaican rum with heavier funk, but I don't regret buying this one. It's a lovely smooth rum and is probably a good introduction to Jamaican rum. I may pick up another bottle in the future if it's on offer. 7.5 if we could award half points.

Really good price for what you get.
