Let's start with the price to justify my title: I've been made aware that this rum is priced vastly differently in different regions, I've heard numbers up to Β£ 70. I found my bottle for 38 β¬, which is approximately half of that. At Β£ 70 I would probably give this more of a 9 than a 10, as it'd have to stand up to some more premium, limited edition bottlings. But at 38 β¬, I don't think it can be beat.
My, obviously always under-qualified, tasting notes are more of the same of what people have written here already: Starts out with some nice sweetness and vanilla (but no added sugar as far as I know), then moves into (for me indiscernible) baking spices, and finishes with some nice wood notes. I'd say the finish is medium-long in length, it doesn't go on for days, but it is quite satisfying. This rum is somehow both sweet and dry, for me noticeably in that order. It's my favorite sipper for a "normal" day, when you want something absolutely delicious, but don't want to get out the bottles that break the bank. It's basically what I thought Plantation XO was before tasting this, as much as it hurts to admit that. If you're looking for something distinctly sweet, get something more sugared. This tastes like a real rum, and like a phenomenal one at that.
Yet another excellent rum from Mount Gay. Has all of the standard attributes, such as smooth, vanilla, oaky, caramel etc. and sweet, but not too sweet. Comparable to my regular tipple of DiplomΓ‘tico Reserva Exclusiva, but unfortunately substantially more expensive in the UK. For that reason alone, it wonβt become one of my regular tipples.
Having loved the black barrel and reading the reviews thought this was going to be a step up, but I was disappointed...
Very good rum for the price, well balanced, not too sweet, nothing exceptional but a good sipper.
I was surprised at just how nice this was.
Only updating my collection a long time after I drank it so my recollection is not the greatest for the details.
Good rum. But too similar to the previous XO. And more pricey. I would rather get the 46% version of R. L. Seales 10.
Pineapple, banana, coconut, vanilla am I in Barbados. A lovely mixture of aromas, A balanced fire in the mouth. I could sip this all evening if there was more in the bottle.
A perfect Bajan Rum with all the subtlety of a Barbados Sunset
I'm not sure this is as good as the classic XO, but this is certainly a decent rum. Currently about $55-65, a decent value all things considered. I think this is a mix of rums from 5 to 17 years old, with the various casks as well.
Nose: Quite a blast of salted caramel, baked desserts, something figy or apricot. A kind of briny richness, yet sweet. Oakiness comes through later, a little sharp from the tannins but nothing too strong.
Taste: First notes come across pretty intense. Clove, honey, a bit of spice. Not an earthy spiciness, closer to black pepper. The tannins give this a bit of a sharp punch, but not in an unpleasant boozy way. On the backend, a bit of vanilla and more honey. The finish is shorter than expected for how strong the initial taste is, not a weak finish but I'm not sure I can taste anything else after 20 seconds or so.
Overall pretty good flavors, a bit on the funky side. Has some bourbon vibes, which makes sense given the casks involved. This mellows out a bit with ice, definitely prefer it neat though. Give it a shot unless it's $70+.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label
