Malibu Coconut

Canada | Flavored | 21% ABV

Malibu Coconut Rum is distilled from fermented molasses and blended with coconut and sugar. The brand is owned by one of the world's largest spirits producers, Pernod Ricard.

In college my sophomore year right before I could legally drink I recall Malibu and Coke was my standby. Ah those were the days. It may be a quasi rum and a weak one at that, but few bring back memories like Malibu and dreams of a tropical sunset :)

We all know this is a liqueur, not a "rum" rum. It is very sweet and overwhelmingly coconut. It's really a matter of in what situation and with who this one would shine. If rum is beer this is a White Claw, a drink for those who like getting drunk but hate the taste of alcohol and their alcoholic friends who aren't above joining them for the ride. It's fun like cotton candy is fun, all sugar and not a lot else, but sometimes you need that sweetness in your life.

Cocktails? Yes, please. Sipping? No, thank you. Very sweet stuff, but this should not be a surprise from a flavored spirit.

Even though the total rating is low, it tastes great with pineapple juice. Not a real rum but at least it doesn't pretend to be one.

Similar to Captain Morgan or Bacardi, just flavoured alcohol if you seek to get painfully drunk.

Not so disastrous since it is very sweet and nice for some cocktails. But I have to say that I don’t consider this one a rum. There are tons of good coconut rums good for sipping. This is not one of them

I certify this review is my own opinion and that I do not have a professional affiliation with Diplomatico.

In the bottle from my childhood. If this isn’t your first experience with coconut rum, then you probably weren’t born 50 years ago. Clear. Coppertone aroma. Maybe a splash of kerosene. So sweet it’s sour. Finishes with saccharine. An American Classic.

So, Malibu, as a rum its a 2, lets face it. You dont sip this as it is.

But I cannot imagine a party without it, most people drink this with pinapple juice - I add it to a coke with a ratio of 1 parts Malibu and 5 parts coke. That sounds diluted because it is but in that ratio the malibu augments the coke perfectly. I dont see malibu as a drink I see it as an augmenter to another drink. I dont mix malibu with coke- i mix coke with malibu.

And if you work from that perspective its a well earned 6/10 that belongs at every party and maybe also at a beach picknick.

But you must see it as a mixer to another drink and not as a rum or a drink to mix something else with.

Don’t see why or when you would drink this other than when you’re already hammered on a beach

We have an own brand alternative to this and no one can tell the difference... considering the store own brand is made of FORTIFIED WINE that should be quite alarming in how not good this is.
