So I like this rum more than the Port Cask Finish, but far less than the Oloroso Cask Finish. For me this Cognac Cask Finish, is a little bit meh, if I’m being totally honest. It’s got some sweetness to it, and the notes of Cognac certainty come through, which are both two positives in my book, and go some way to satisfying my craving for all things sweet. However, on the flip side, I do feel this rum is far to harsh and possesses a weird aftertaste. In it’s defence though, I will concede that when mixed with Coca-Cola, it does become much improved. Mind you, however much coke I used, it still had that dodgy finish to it. Another major problem I have with this Ron Abuelo Rum, is that I immediately wanted and needed to compare it to the Plantation XO 20th Anniversary Rum, which I absolutely love. And for me the Ron Abuelo literally doesn’t compare, because the Plantation Cognac Finish is far sweeter and smoother, so a much better fit for someone like me, who likes their rums as mellow as possible, and the more sugary the better! Plus at £50, it’s £12 cheaper than the Abuelo.

The nose pulls you in with brown sugar and vanilla tones and the initial taste seems sweet, but fades into a rich finish. Very nice balance of barrel finish and mild sweetness.

Another excellent rum from Abuelo. I thank the Rum Ratings Club for introducing me to this family of rums. Smooth and flavorful. Sweet, but not too sweet. I prefer the Centuria and Two Oaks but this is still very good.

Oak and sweetness on the nose. Sherry, spices, and molasses on the tongue. Very smooth and dry finish. Very tasty and I’ll be looking forward to the next time I can find this one.

Arrgh... yet another cask rum hidin' behind the cask. Still, this be a complex and tasty rum. She smells sweet of oak and caramel, but there also be raisins and - fightin' her way to the top - cognac. As for taste, these all come aboard, with a bit of camphor towards the end, and then cognac, but almost more like a wine. She has a weird sweetness about her that not be sugary. Not bad, just weird... like that one crew member who always needs quality time with his cannonballs. This rum be dry but very smooth with little burn goin' down the hatch. Aye, she be a decent sipper - even better if you be a fan of cognac - but you'll not find a drop of it on my ship...

Rhum qui est une bonne decouverte. Très voluptueux en bouche. Le finish Cognac lui une vrai saveur d exception. Vraiment très agréable. À goûter.

En dejlig behagelig, og let drikkelig rom. Den mangler dog lidt for at komme højere op end en 8´er.

Tasting Osoroso sherry, Napoleon, and Port cask on the same night this was my favorite. A little sweeter and smoother than the other two, but all three are excellent. Deep dark color smooth as silk with lingering depth. Perfect pairing for a cigar.

Well balanced. Dry slight sweetness. Great for sipping on a cold winters night.
