Both this and the 18 are very good rums indeed. I'd certainly happily sip either of them neat and put them alongside many very good Caribbean rums in my collection. There is a lot of depth to both rums, and they are both worth a 9. This one pushes a 10.
This one is, as you would expect, slightly better than the 18 - for me only maybe 10% better and since it's about 4-5 times the cost, and retails at over £100 in the Canaries and a lot more in the UK, I wasn't tempted to buy it (well...I was but considered it too extravagent).
Basically, it's got everything that the 18 has but just a little bit more. I tasted it at the Distillery on Gran Canary in October 2021 and they told us that it actually contained some 38 year old rum. I'm not sure if this is new, but anyway, I was pleased to hear it.
There is lots of depth to this on the nose, tongue and aftertaste. It's pretty smooth, but still has a kick and a punch. Drinking it in the sun at the Distillery was certainly something to savour and I did just that. If they'd sold it in smaller bottles, I may have been tempted more as at this price I'd be drinking it only at Christmas or on my birthday.
Anyway, if you get a chance to try this, do so.
I've visited the Arehucas distillery in Gran Canaria. Nice niche traditional enterprise. Their top tier rum is from 1983 barrels so the Captain Kidd is now actually older than the 30 years displayed on the label. Nice rum indeed, but to be honest not at the level of it's age. Not much body, and no real character.
Tasted at the distillery. Smoothest rum I’ve tasted to date. If it wasn’t for the price I’d definitely have bought it.
Denna rom är den överlägset bästa jag någonsin provat!
Den är så len i smaken!
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label
