Before I learned about real rums, I thought white rum was flavourless.
That was wrong.
This is one of the more aromatic rums and its flavour profile is pretty unique.
Nose and taste are the same. Over-ripe, possibly already decomposing pineapple, papaya, pears, muddy "funk" notes. Brutishly intense, but that is what is great about it.
Note that it is a dry rum. There is some fruity sweetness, but not much of it. Probably no added sugar here.
Great for sipping, but needs to be diluted (and I do like an ice cube in this).
Great with fruit juice. Pineapple works especially well, but nearly everything else should be worth a try.
I love this as a rum and soda. 2-4 cl of Wray and Nephew White Overproof with 3-5 ice cubes in a glas. Fill with soda water to taste (I like 10-20 cl), add one or more slices of fresh lime or lemon. Makes a very dry, very refreshing longdrink. For reference; I am otherwise a whisky soda guy.
I love this stuff. I spoke mixed drinks with this for an extra punch of abv and flavor. I drink this straight. I want to try as Ti Punch. I also want to try “aging” method with oak staves. Great value!!
I'm a little bit disappointed by this rum. Compared to other white Jamaican overproof rums that I've tried, this one has much less hogo. It does have some hogo, which is still appreciable if mixed with just a little juice, like, say, grapefruit juice. But it can't stand against other strong ingredients in long drinks; there the funk practically disappears.
This is arguably the best rum for the price. A lovely funky rum with pineapple and rotting fruit notes that taste like nothing other than a rum from jamaica. With water or ice, it’s an awesome sipper, and does exceptionally well in cocktails.
A Sommelier recommended this rum to my daughter to give me for a stocking stuffer this Christmas and I enjoyed it, which at the end of the day, is all that matters.
It’s a 126 proof rum that’s surprisingly smooth. And it doesn’t have an overpowering taste which is great if you want to mix it with expensive ruhms.
It has a place in my bar.
If you wanna drink like the local Jamaican people well then you have to add this to your collection. Super funky Overproof at a massive bargain. Love this stuff
I use this as the rum ingredient in my homemade falernum. It is adequate, as it doesn't contribute much for flavor, so my recipe shines through.
The first couple times having this rum, I had great difficulty getting past a strong banana note; however, once acclimated to the intense flavour profile, I'm really enjoying this. A note of caution: if you are starting into these funky rums, do not prime the palate with aged rum such as Foursquare - I find the shift over to wray & nephew as a sipper requires a fresh palate, an open mind, and perhaps a little water.
On the nose I get fried ripe plantain, olives, funk, white wine, vanilla, cinnamon and floral notes. Water brings out some more floral character. The palate is caramel, pepper, vanilla, is oily and again fried plantain. The finish is walnut and slightly drying; medium length (but the funkiness lingers).
The more I try this rum the more I'm finding it interesting. The rum category is a truly diverse and interesting one, perhaps the most of any spirit. I do agree with another reviewer that says it can be polarizing; I use to dislike it and now I quite enjoy it.
This was my introduction to "funk" taste in rum and is my go-to for any drinks I want to add that flavor.
Get notable citrus and vegetal/grassy aromas.
"Despite the funk and grassy aromas there is still a fair amount of sweetness on the nose. ."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

I can’t believe this has so little aging to it. Lots of funky, banana-y aroma and flavor. A hint of liquid smoke aroma. I also taste something like those salty burnt pieces you find in a bag of sunflower seeds. When the rum hits front of your tongue, you get a creamy vanilla flavor. Overall a really nice rum with lots of character.
