This is a surprisingly good rum. I didn't have high hopes reading the ratings and knowing I prefer a sweeter rum, but this one is good.

Nose for me is brown sugar and oak, while the taste is more smoky and long finish. Slightly spicy, bitter, and tart, but not overpowering. Slightly one dimensional without new flavors surfacing after the initial sip, I wonder if 3-5 more years of cask aging would really have improved this one.

This is a unique rum experience and should be tried.

That said, the rum smells and finishes like perfume! I prefer the cheaper and tastier Barcelo Grand Anjeo to the Imperial. This one surprised me, in a bad way...

I'm thinking it must be the barrels they are using for this label. The oak flavor was odd, it was over oaked providing a burnt tobacco flavor. The whole rum was way off, dry, and unbalanced. The only saving grace is that I could taste a quality aged rum wanting to come out. It was just overpowered by a strange oakey flavor and overly pungent botanicals. For my second try I used a glass of Coke to help calm it down a bit but that lingering perfume aroma would not go away and that strange oak flavor prevailed.

The rum is not worth the price but its something a rum drinker should try. Maybe your experience will be different but I think Barcelo took what could have been a great rum and messed it up terribly.

It's also a nasty hangover. That smell is still in my nose and I feel awful right now!

Sweet aroma of vanila and spices. Oily palate with ginger warmth. Bit spicy but great though.

The first time I drank Barcelo Imperial was in Cuba where I spent my days drinking Ron Cubay on the rocks in the sweltering heat, watching the 2014 football World Cup on TV in a local café. The owner had a bottle of the Dominican Imperial on his "top shelf". Compared to the Cubay Anejo it was quite a splurge, although a bottle is actually very decently priced. I had a couple and was pleasantly surprised. Very smooth, a pleasant honey/vanilla-sweetness, light and summery. Back home I bought a bottle and quickly fell out of love. It's been a while - so don't crucify me if I get it wrong - but I remember I thought it very one-dimensional, the vanilla (almost tasted like added vanilla-extract) was very boring after a while and I found nothing else to exite me. You'll expect more from a rum that boldy styles itself 'Imperial'. It's a classic case of overpromise, underdeliver.

For 5 consecutive years was considered the best rum in the world and then was replaced by the Imperial Premium Blend also belongs to the Barceló range . Great to be served on the rocks and has a wonderful perfect serve : Ice on the rocks and a vanilla pod ( awakens the "secret" scents of this rum. It is definitely a rum to taste and take home for those who really know how to appreciate rum.

Dry without a burn, and still quite tasty, gives the impression of being stronger than it is, Straight up, on the rocks, or... my favorite, with soda.

Woody semi sweet rum, comes across your palate with a bit of burn but overall not to bad for the money.
