The label did it's job, was unique enough to give it a shot. Price was OK but in comparison to other rums in this class it needs to come down some. Something like Cruzan Single Barrel, El Dorado 8, Cana 7, all preferable to this for ~$30. Would rate this 5.5 or so, maybe a 6 if price was slightly better.
Nose is a bit odd. It's both sweet and smoky. This reminds me quite a bit of Matusalem 10 year, just smoky. Similar nose, taste, just much smokier. Vanilla and marshmallow scent, kind of thin caramel but hard to discern exactly due to the smoke. Sweetness comes first then the smokiness. The nose seems a bit weak overall.
Taste is also similar. Very vanilla forward, not a premium vanilla taste but doable. Some marshmallow as well. This would be quite light without the smokiness carrying through. The mouthfeel is quite thin, not impressive when drunk neat.
I would probably mix with this. Maybe good for a classic rum and coke to highlight the vanilla? The main problem is price: for just a couple dollars more you can move up to something like El Dorado 12 year, which is miles better than this product. It should cost no more than $25 and even then I'd still consider alternatives.
A 5.5 on my scale. I like the turtle and the description on the box held high hopes. Straight I am still trying to figure out the flavor. Maybe smokey? A little nicer mixed. Strong after-burn. The distiller has three others that I would like to try as well.
