Barbancourt 5 Star Reserve Especiale 8-Year rum

Barbancourt 5 Star Reserve Especiale 8-Year

Haiti | Aged

Barbancourt 5 Star Reserve Especiale 8-Year Rum is agricultural, meaning it's produced from fermented sugar cane juice rather than the more typical molasses. The sugar cane juice is double distilled and aged for eight years in Limousin oak barrels.

Dupré Barbancourt created the Barbancourt rum recipe in 1862 in Haiti, where the rum is still produced today. A French national, Barbancourt incorporated traditional French methods including double-distillation in the process.

One of the smoothest rums I've had the pleasure to taste. Nice and complex in flavor and balance and supremely approachable for rum novices. You'll get your money's worth either sipping neat or in a cocktail.

Avast! I weren't too sure of what to expect with this rhum, but shiver my soul if it didn't surprise me! Forget what you know about Haitian rhum, mates! This beauty smells sweet of caramel and oak, but there also be a bit of floweriness to it with a hint of fruit. Aye, this be a Haitian rhum, but there be none of that grassy taste only a farm animal would appreciate. She be not too sweet, and the first thing on board is a creamy, smooth flavor I can't quite put my finger on... and can't get enough of. That leads to a bold nuttiness that was clearly hidin' below deck. And then! Unless I am mistook, she finishes with a hint of PEACH flavor. Aye, this rhum be smooth, and there be a bit of burn that lasts for a bit, but everything else about this rhum more than makes up for that. After a sippin' few, you'll find that she's taken a hold of you like a barnacle on the hardest-to-reach part of your hull...

This would be a great place to start trying agricole. It's probably the most similar to molasses rum you'll find in the agricole group. Absolutely delicious. Don't expect a normal rum though this has the grassy funk you would expect from an agricole but it's still so smooth. It can really transform some cocktails and give a twist you weren't expecting but is probably better when sipped on it's own.

Don't be fooled by bad reviews, this r(h)um has it all - a bit of smoke, charred oak, honey, cinnamon, toffee, very little burn on the finish. There's also a plasticky, medicinal element to this that's not unpleasant. The flavors dance on the palate. Mouthfeel is nice and thick. I also get hints of honeyed raisins. A lover of bourbon and scotch will enjoy this fine offering.

Nice light amber in bottle and glass. Nose was grassy, some green (black) pepper maybe nutmeg and oak. Still have some nice burn front and finish but between was a fruity mix of maybe pineapple and peaches, but not sweet at all. Finish, the alcohol was still pleasantly there with pepper and grass. Very fine finish. A quarter ice cube changes it, more fruity less alcohol, so it could be even more versatile. Permanent on the shelf.
