I will have to admit, I did not pay for this bottle, nor would I usually buy a clear rum(as I almost always exclusively just sip rum) but for what it is intended for, I could see it working I suppose. I’m too lazy to make cocktails so I’ll have to figure out a use for this somehow or another. Maybe I can substitute it for anything calling for vodka.
Tasted at Laka Lono on June 20, 2021 - the Summer Equinox
I'll start by stating hat I feel like this should be called a light or a white rum. The word organic, while perhaps accurate if it is pesticide free, just doesn't help a person understand from the name what they are drinking.
I had a taste and then converted this rum to a Daiquiri because I just didn't find anything interesting about it.
Sorry to insult you Kula. Everything is better than Bacardi. But this is about all you can say for this rum. It isn’t as harsh as most. The organic moniker does nothing for me. It will make a fine daiquiri.
Tasted at Laka Lono on 6/20/21. Pours clear. Clean aroma. Slight mint aroma. Flavor is also somewhat limited. Mild sugar cane, but very mild. A bit of toluene, but otherwise benign. Residual mintiness throughout. These rums have impressive bottles, but that's about it.
I really want to like Kula. They grow their own organic sugar cane and hand-process each bottle in their small batch distillery on Maui. I had a fantastic time touring their farm and the owners couldn't be better people.
The flavor of this rum is actually really good for an unaged light rum. However, there is a spicy harshness to this rum that makes it hard to recommend. Can be mixed well in coke and imparts a nice sweet vanilla tone. A few years in American oak would do wonders to smooth this rum out.
