Quite a Bonnie marriage 9 out of 10
So, I had no idea what to expect from this. Marrying Rum and Scotch whisky Could go either way right? I love single malt Scotch. I love good rum. Islay is definitely my favorite Scotch region but Kilchoman NOT my favorite Islay distillery. Plantation already one of my favorite Rum distillers. This is a single cask Plantation rum. There have been some very good single malt Scotches matured in rum casks. Balvenie 14 comes immediately to mind. But I have not tried the inverse, a rum matured in a Scotch whisky cask. This one is superb! It starts sweet and crisp, almost a hint of sauternes but it isn't too sweet. On the tongue it advances oh so smoothly into some fantastic peat and smoke. Just what I was hoping for. Peaty finish is long and soulful. Very smooth, very balanced. No bite or burn at all. Not terribly complex. Not thick and rich like many rums. It actually feels a little thin. It doesn't have the depth many good rums have but it more than makes up for it in smooth peat and smoke flavors that I love in Scotch whisky. Scotch drinkers, especially peat fans, will love this. I always taste first bottles neat and on the rocks. This one is slightly better on ice. A very nice sipper. This was difficult to find in the USA. I finally found a store with just one bottle. My search is on for another as I have to have at least one more of these to "squirrel away". Very good and very unique.
