Very nice surprise. This is the first Abuelo rum that I’ve tried and I am very pleased. Beautiful caramel color. Sweet nose of sherry and oak. Elegant mixture of flavors such as vanilla, caramel, dark fruits, and spice. The finish is a bit sweet but no harsh burn and extremely smooth.
Got a sample of this in my second batch from RR Tasting Club and participated in the virtual tasting yesterday.
The Abuelo XV Oloroso is 15 years old and is first matured in American oak casks to be finished in Oloroso Sherry casks.
In nose it’s possible to recognize smoke, wood, citrus and Sherry.
In mouth and palate it’s possible to also recognize those aromas but it’s also fruity and nutty and of course sweet. Read somewhere that a hydrometer test gave 44 gpl. The finish is medium long.
Picture: My emptied sample.
If you like whisky, especially Scorch whisky yuo are going to love this. Really good. Very very smooth. Very balanced. Deep sherry and oak notes. Coffee and a hint of molasses. Vanilla fading in the background. Great finish. Long smooth and subtle. This is some great sipping rum.
This is very short review - proportional to the volume of the glass and number of shots )
1. Rum JM XO 45°
Apples on nose, smooth, oaky. Very pleasant aftertaste.
2. Clairin 46.x°
Almonds, burnt sugar, rich and oily. Might be the most smooth out of Clairin range.
3. Damoiseau 66.9°
Rich, exotic taste, little ethanol kick. Somehow comparable to JM due to pronounced oak.
4. On desert: Abuelo XV
Just pure pleasure!
Scoring 9.5 for all of them. To be more precise and objective need 4 x 0.75L
Len och mjuk i smaken, mycket god och ingen spritsmak.
Another 5 cl sample from RR tasting club, presented at a very nice online meeting.
The aroma is sour and not very intense, dominated by humid wood. One can sense fresh notes and cane, probably coming from the cane-juice-based component. Sweet fruity aromas are also present after some time.
In he mouth this rum strikes with sugar. Grapes, apples, raisins, apricots, plums and other sweet fruits appear but not to last too long. It is mild, the wood is almost absent, attenuated by taste of almonds. There is short woody finish but the tastes are gone very fast.
The overall experience is like drinking a thick sweet syrup. Not my cup of tea, unfortunately.
... and very sweet Sherry as for that: This is one for you. I do like sherry, but this rum is too much. Too sweet. It is very agreable to the nose (plums and sherry), but then too sweet in your mouth. There is a hint of dark chocolate, though. Dark chocolate that lingers in your palate for a pretty long time.
I was really wanting this one to be special but in the end I was left a little underwhelmed.
Although it is the lowest rated from XV family - this one seemed the most complex in the blind tasting. A clear winner for me out of three Abuelo XV rums.
Just let it breathe for a quite a while as the initial smell and taste might trick you.
