Guatemala | Aged | 40% ABV | Column Still (1-4) Distilled
Ron Zacapa 23 Solera Rum was created in 1976 in the highlands of Guatemala, where it is distilled in a copper-lined column still from fresh cane juice before solera aging.
The 500 year-old Spanish Sistema Solera method is used to age Ron Zacapa 23 in white oak casks. This results in a combination of rums aged between 6 and 23 years.
The current Ron Zacapa 23 bottle features a woven band around the middle, which is in reference to the original hand woven palm leaf petate bottle cover that covered the bottle.

Not much good to write about this rum. Especially for the price. Tasted more like a $20-25 of rum. It's just fine. Not horrible, not good. Just meh.
I bought this early into my rum journey due to it's high praise, but soon realized it is mediocre at best, if I want a sugared rum liqueur, I would prefer diplomatico. It's been reduced to cocktail duty or for tastings to compare and contrast what it is not vs real rums.
everybody knows the name Zacapa, even my mother and she don't like rum.... for my personal view they take care more about the branding and marketing than the product it self...
Way too sweet, way too flat.
I had low expectorations about Zacapa, and I was still disappointed.
Bought once⦠not again.
Found it to be a very ok rum
Overvalued.
I decidet to buy this rum since there is a plenty of good ratings on this rum, but I was very disappointed.
On the nose is nice, but in the taste I found something hard defying which my tongue did not liked. Something synthetic bitterish and sharp.
There are lot of better rums in this price range. Definitely will not buy again :-/
Definitely not bad. But for me too much oak and to less softness in aftertaste. And in the end I feel cognac...
So, as a big rum fan I tried this as it is surrounded by a lot of hype. The best conclusion I can make is, if you think this is a good rum, you are not a rum fan, stop drinking rum and go back to single malts.
This tastes like a really smooth, sweet single malt. Not bad, but the sweetness seems like 'sweetener' sweet, not sugar or caramel. I did try mixing it too, but it is terrible with cola, terrible with ginger, but not so bad with Copella apple and raspberry juice.
I ended up binning it.
Edit. (27/12/2022)
So coming back to this, I had it a few times back to back with some other rums and whisky, and what I previously said kinda stands, though I have to admit, it is a decent sipper. Very smooth and has some characterful flavour that dances around after. I still think its highly overrated, but doesn't deserve the '3' I previously gave it. In my retrospect, and much broader understanding compared to several years ago, I certainly appreciate this drink (significantly more than I do Kirk and Sweeney for example), and thus considering it as such I have updated the score to reflect where I believe it lies. I certainly wouldnt recommend this drink as a mixing rum, or a slogger, but this is a decent sipper. There are many good rums id choose over this at its selling point, but i'd not turn it down when available.
Nose: Brown sugar, vanilla, some dark fruit, a little bit of tar.
Palate: Caramel, chocolate, alcohol soaked cherries, vanille. Very liqueurish and thick.
Finish: Spices, clove, vanilla, mokka.
I bought this on recommendation from the liquor store staff when I was still quite new to rum and had no idea about "Spanish style" rums and their affinity for added sugar. And while it certainly isn't bad, I can say that this particular style doesn't really suit my preferences.
I can understand why cigar smokers like Ron Zacapa as it seems robust and bold enough to co-exist with tobacco smoke.
Actually quite dry and oaky.
"Flavour builds if you leave the rum in your mouth for a little longer allowing it to coat the palate."
Wonderfully intricate with honeyed butterscotch, spiced oak and raisined fruit...

Decanted, the rum displays a surprising body in the glass for something so apparently light, and has slow and strong legs down the side of the glass.

Boring. Nice vanilla taste but lots of added sugar that hides the rum. Plus the 23 is misleading. Overall id say it's simply over rated
