Guatemala | Aged | 40% ABV | Column Still (1-4) Distilled
Ron Zacapa 23 Solera Rum was created in 1976 in the highlands of Guatemala, where it is distilled in a copper-lined column still from fresh cane juice before solera aging.
The 500 year-old Spanish Sistema Solera method is used to age Ron Zacapa 23 in white oak casks. This results in a combination of rums aged between 6 and 23 years.
The current Ron Zacapa 23 bottle features a woven band around the middle, which is in reference to the original hand woven palm leaf petate bottle cover that covered the bottle.

Did a rum tasting night with my dad a while back and out of 15 rums we sampled that night this was his favorite, I like it too!
I've heard people raving and complaining about this rum for years, so I just had to finally buy a bottle and experience it for myself. Nothing spectacular about the bottle, the colour or the scent. I've tried it straight, with ice and mixed with coke, and although all variations were quite nice, I have to agree with the complain camp. This stuff would have been so much better if it hadn't been so sweet(ened). I've heard the Zacapa XO is much better, basically a more matured and less sweetened version. I'm not going to buy that one, because the price is sky-high. The truth is, at this price range, the 23 Solera should have been what the XO is claimed to be . There's no doubt I'm going to finish and enjoy the bottle, but it is a bit of a con, really.
Might be my last solera finished rum. I am just not a fan. Everyone of them no matter how old is thin, impotent and completely unremarkable. A 23 year old rum should have complexity, character and depth. I mean this is from a fine and very reputable distiller. Yet after 23 years it has none of the attributes above. It is the solera finish that does it. If you prefer Lite beer to Guinness you might like this. Rather have a veggie burger than a filet mignon? Choose a White Owl over a Cohiba? This is your rum.
Zu wenig Süße und vollmundig um diesen Preis. Farbe ist sehr sehr schön, aber es fehlt die Eleganz...
A sweet silky smooth chocolaty taste with a underlying salty maltiness. I got absolutely no alcohol warmth or burn with this one. I have to say I found this rum to be flat and underwhelming, it could have done with some oomph.
Won’t restock when finished but enjoyable none-the-less.
Rund, weich aber ohne Körper. Im Abgang nichtssagend. Für den Preis leider nicht angemessen.
Good, simple rum. I don't get excited, but it still enjoy it.
Prefer his big brother, Zacapa XO
Good sipper but, fell short in the flavor department for me. For the price point and the reviews I expected more. Still not a bad rum and it goes down smooth and is very pleasant on the nose. Not what I expected.
Cheers
Actually quite dry and oaky.
"Flavour builds if you leave the rum in your mouth for a little longer allowing it to coat the palate."
Wonderfully intricate with honeyed butterscotch, spiced oak and raisined fruit...

Decanted, the rum displays a surprising body in the glass for something so apparently light, and has slow and strong legs down the side of the glass.

Tasty, but not quite great.

A little over rated rum, but not taste badly. A bit too sweet.
