I picked up a bottle of the 15 yo while vacationing on Amelia Island, FL. This is a truly fantastic rum, now one of my favorites. What distinguishes this rum is the smooth sweet caramel taste at the beginning, with a soft barrel(wood) finish at the end with hardly a bite. Highly recommended.

This isnโ€™t as good as the 21 year, but it is still very good. Super light, smooth, and easy to sip but very flavorful. Sweet caramel, vanilla, and smokiness are the notes I got out of it. Definitely will purchase another bottle.

Tasted at Laka Lono 3/22/23 during a Kill Devil Explorers Club tasting
Amber color
Aroma: orange zest and caramel
A flavorful rum, sweeter than the 12 year. Tastes like quality.

A group of investors from Abaco and Walker's Cay in the Bahamas hooked up with the legendary Don Pancho in Panama. They now have access to his casks and their 21 year old was their first creation. Their bottles were inspired by one that washed up on Abaco's beaches and was dated back to the 1600's. With this tremendous amount of effort for them to produce their definitive rum from the casks of a living rum legend, I could do no wrong in trying a few bottles.

Their 21 year old goes for $110, their 15 year old goes for $48, their 12 year old goes for $33, and their 8 year old goes for $27. I carefully chose the 15 year old and 12 year old for starters. I made great efforts to get my hands on two of these! See the enclosed photo of both. The 15 year is slightly darker, but is not quite easy to tell the difference in the photo. Their website says that some people can tell these two apart. I am so glad to be among those some people!

Their goal was to produce one of the smoothest tasting rums ever and to that end, they have succeeded tremendously. The nose on both is of caramel with no acetone or burn. The taste on both is smooth, but the 12 year old has some burn. The awesome finish on the 15 year old is where it shines. I rate this one as a high 8 and the 12 year old as a mid 7.5. The 15 year old definitely warrants repeat purchases! When compared side by side to their 21 year old much later, this 15 year old is definitely their best buy!

Update September 15, 2021: I have been hoarding my last bottle of their 15 year old rum for six months because I would have to drive 200 miles to get some more. Well, I opened that last bottle up today and I have to say that I would take the taste of this rum over any of those from Foursquare ECS except for their Shibboleth. This one is also a lot cheaper to boot. Time for another road trip to get more of this fantastic rum at a great price!

Update December 18, 2022: Out of curiosity, I ranked all 64 rums that I have tried that cost more than $50 US. This ranking was by best value, with my criteria being that taste counts twice as much as cost. This was the clear winner for best value on rums that cost more than $50 US. Now I have to drive more than 200 miles to get a few more bottles.

Updated: Bought a bottle during my next trip to Florida. My original rating improved. All around great flavor, smoothness and finish.

Sometimes where your at influences your opinion of a rum. This was a good dinner by the ocean in the Keys of Florida. Rum had a bit of a bite at first, but i enjoyed the flavors. Not too sweet, just right. Iโ€™ll buy this again.

Laka Lono Club tasting on 3/22/23. Color about the same as the 12 yr. Caramel aroma. Has the sugar candy sweetness of the 8 year. Thinner than the 12 in body. Pretty good.

Iโ€™m a Flip fan, what can I say.
The rum is good but not great. The bottle is cool and so is the story.
It was more intriguing when you could only get it in Florida.

The liquid not gold does not earn the price. This rum is ok but it too expensive for the quality.

Sugar: Estimated in the 40 GPL. I read another review that had Frigate rum at 44 GPL. The 15 year old version is a very sweet rum. Overall this rum is a disappointment. It tastes like someone dropped a bottle of Amaretto liqueur into the rum barrel. It's really sweet with strong taste of Almonds and Vanilla. No other redeeming taste characteristics. I tried this rum on 4 different occasions before I gave up and put it on my shelf of mixing rums. Based on this, I will not be purchasing the 21 year version.
