I haven't tasted Jamaican rum so much, but this one was pretty good. Very good smell with dried fruits and specifically banana aroma. It's stronger rum as usual, but 46% doesn't seem too strong to enjoy all its flavour. Need to mention that aftertaste isn't so rich as it's smell. Enjoy and explore!
The last one that I had was I think a 10yo, and I reviewed it in 2016. This one is a 12yo bottled in 2017.
From Worthy Park and bottled at 46%. I can't recall where the previous one came from, and I think IIRC it was bottled at 40%. To me this is a ridiculous situation that Mezan has created, to have 2 rums labelled the same but with different ages. There is no easy way to differentiate the two, although the back label on the 12yo has bottling dates and some other info.
The tasting note states "light grassy aromas with underlying notes of dried fruit, green bananas and ending with a buttermilk sweetness." That is largely true and it has unmistakable characteristics that you would expect in a Jamaican.
"Oaky flavours, butterscotch and some fruit on the palate. A little pepper, dry wood oak and some vanilla on the finish." It is dry, but there's not a huge amount to get excited about. For a 46% rum, it is disappointingly lacking in weight of body. And the finish is so short and what it does leave doesn't entice you back for more. As a result, it is very easy to drink but without huge reward.
I love some of the Mezan bottlings, but this isn't one of them. I was going to say that I would take the Appleton 12yo over this, but I thought it best to taste it to compare. The Appleton is quite industrial by comparison. While it may be fuller bodied with better length, the fruit just does not have the finesse that the Mezan has. This has put me in a bit of a quandary. The Mezan is disappointing in many areas, but when side by side with a competitor, it shows it up.
I'm hoping that the bottle will blossom with a little more time open.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Honey yellow amber in a glass.
In the nose, delicate scents of caramel, vanilla and wood try to seduce you. Fruits, flowers, mosses and resins prepare the way.
On the palate a wave of aromas that wants to be ridden. Very sharp at the beginning, the wave breaks, tropical fruits, banana, mango, caramel, wood, vanilla, the perfect surf.
In the finish a lot of fruit topped with caramel, tasty and refreshing.
A genuine rum that needs a very, very long open time to reveal its secrets. A somewhat shy and mild rum (like all the mezan I've tasted so far) but still honest through and through. Not as funky as other bottlings. For beginners and connoisseurs, nothing for sweet rum fans.
