It's just a plain moonshine. Tastes nothing like a rum at all. This is not what you expect when buying rum... I bought it at a reputable liqueur store, so I highly doubt it could have been faked. Anyway, leaving review as is until I find another place to try this.

This is the Coruba version that we can get in Western Europe. It reminds me of the "funk" that you'll find in the Smith & Cross but a bit more toned down due to less alcohol by volume. It has an unique flavor that can not be compared to other gold Rums in it's price category. I like it in cocktails as a flavor enhancer, but neat it has a weird savory and warm mouthfeel that I do not fully appreciate. By no means a bad rum, but just not balanced enough as a sipper in my opinion.

Coruba means Companie rhumiere de Bâle and I'm from Basle… But that said I'm completely independent. This rum isn't available in the U.S. nor will it ever be. I do have a problem with the words Coruba NPU (= "non plus ultra") is being marketed with at the moment by Swiss shops like Coop. They claim it's heavily woody, with strong notes of oak and chocolate. Holy shit, what a nonsense! No it isn't. It's in all likelihood not at all aged. This blend tastes like an unaged Wedderburn. Fruity, pungent, but not at all oaky. Tried straight, the flavour in the nose reminds me the most of figs. Mixed with cola it results in a typical funky Jamaican rum and cola. On the palate it's surprisingly smooth for an unaged pungent spirit. My guess: It's a blend of a big share of smooth neutral rum with a small share of highly pungent ester-bomb. The colour is undoubtedly fake. But that said it's more funky than the Coruba Black Jamaican available in North America. It resembles the Smith & Cross if you dilute that to 40% vol.
