A very interesting rum from a little heard-of distillery based in Belize.
Travellers Liquors was first established in 1953, and took its name from the role it used to play in serving travellers on the road to Belize City. Travellers produces its rum from a very high quality of molasses, and employs natural fermentation and double distillation to produce a flavourful, yet pure, spirit. The distillery is best known for its One Barrel rum range.
Once again, Dutch Independent bottlers Ultimatum have demonstrated their fine eye for picking excellent barrels, with this cracking bottling. This rum was first distilled in June 2006, and bottled on the 28th of July 2017, having aged for fully 11 years in a single former Bourbon barrel, number 29. 11 years is quite a long time for a rum to mature in the tropical heat of Belize, so expect plenty of complexity and flavour from this spirit.
Unfortunately, rum does not enjoy the best reputation when it comes to providing drinkers with details of what the bottle contains and the processes the spirit has undergone. Ultimatum bucks this trend with a label that avoids bunkum and provides facts.
Not only do Ultimatum let the drinker know that this rum is non chill filtered, natural in colour and bottled without additional sugar (ensuring the rum’s natural flavours shine through), but they also detail that it is a rum in the English style. This doesn’t mean that England has been involved in the production of this rum, but refers to the heavier, darker version of the spirit that former British colonies produce.
This rum provides beautiful flavours of cane, sweet brown sugar, pineapple, mangos, rich vanilla, caramel and banana. This bottling possesses perfect poise between spirit and cask. Bottled 46% ABV, this bump in strength means the spirit is even more flavoursome and intense.
Only 432 bottles of this rum were produced, meaning that drinkers should move fast if they want to sample this spirit, as stocks are highly limited!
