Vanilla-marshmallow-buttercream Jamaican

40% ABV. Pot-distilled in Jamaica then "aggressively matured" for 2 years in CA in Chardonnay barrels. Nose: buttercream and marshmallows. Slightest hint of funk. Vanilla. P: kinda like a flatter, more marshmallow-y Plantation 20th. Very sweet, short finish.
Yikes! My thoughts going into this were "thank goodness they're buying decent juice from Jamaica rather than trying to figure it out on their own." Well, somehow, they still managed to screw it up. Maybe it's the chardonnay, maybe it's something more. I'm really not a fan of those artificial vanilla marshmallow notes, and feel like they added buttercream flavor to give it more "chardonnay" influence. Who knows. I'd be interested to taste this at higher proof, to really tease out the flavors, but right now they're really falling flat. I feel like it should mix alright, but sometimes that just brings out the artificial notes. The Jamaican backbone keeps it from scoring even lower (it's definitely closer to "flawed with a glimmer of hope" and "easily consumable in a bind" than "tasty but not quite great," which somehow has 4 levels above it).
